Daily soda consumption linked to cognitive difficulties in teens
New research indicates that daily consumption of sodas and sports drinks may hinder the cognitive abilities of adolescents. A recent analysis suggests that these sugary beverages disrupt sleep patterns, which in turn leads to difficulties with memory, concentration, and decision-making. These findings were published in the journal Nutritional Neuroscience.

This is at best a hypothesis-generating exercise. As far as I can tell the survey on which this „finding“ is based did not actually contain any data about the teen’s sugar consumption. (i.e. if they mostly drank sugar-free sodas, the correlation could be due to caffeine content instead)
Would be more accurate to say „simple sugars“ and especially „caffeine“, rather than „soda“. You can have sugar and caffeine free sodas, which dont share the mechanisms that the authors highlight as probable causes for disrupted sleep from soda and sports drinks.
Seems like an incredibly weak study given the limitations, but should be a base to drill down further. There are more confounds than there are explanations. They touch on some like caffeine and socioeconomics. But you figure impulse control of teens who seek more soda, family dietary patterns, or additional consumption of highly processed foods.
With the weak correlation of electrolyte beverages and only in girls. POTS became a bit of a social media trend for young women around the turn of the pandemic with electrolytes being pushed heavily. So you have a group who may have some level of dysautonomia more likely to be consuming sports drinks.
Seems like highly processed sugars = worse sleep, which we already know.
Moderation is important. My kiddos get one can of soda a week during pizza nights on Fridays (non caffeinated, usually root beer or sprite, though I let my 14 yr old have a can of coke over winter break as a treat)
Luckily they’re huge water drinkers overall.
More details on correlation and causation are clearly needed. But, my simple view says “moderation in all things” referencing diet here. Any ‘overindulge’ must have an impact on homeostasis. Maybe not overt, but that doesn’t mean non existent.
