This is a systematic destruction of scientific research and thereby destruction of the country’s economic future.

  2. They are actively trying to kill us or want us to pay money to their friends for a weather report subscription – maybe both. European models tend to be really good and there are several amateur channels on YouTube that are alright if you want a free weather report.

  3. Can’t wait for my weather app to just start saying ‚Trust me, it’s gonna be huge‘ instead of actually showing a forecast 🥲

  4. Of course this is just more grifting – that’s all it ever is with this administration.

A lot of what these idiots do makes a kind of vague sense from their prospective of enriching themselves at the expense of everybody else, except for this. This literally kills them, their future and their children’s future. WTF???

  6. > The computing center, which is slated to be turned over to an unspecified third party

    Presumably, Trump’s crypto scam company

Winter forecast : Snow is coming in two weeks

  9. These super computers are the size of rooms so I’m a bit perplexed on the exact logistics here.

Ultimately it’s not cheap to be certain

honestly, this isn’t about weather. It’s about who owns the data pipeline and who gets to monetize the chaos.

Call it climate policy if you want. It’s just rent-seeking theater with a server rack.

Is this so we can slide back into blaming the gays for hurricanes?
    Because that was hilariously stupid.

He destroys everything he touches. The cost of the guy running our Country will take forever to dig out of.

  13. US weather forcasts will be produced by the white house for now on, with a whiteboard app and big black sharpee crayons.

  14. Brilliant. The government is dismantling the equipment that proves the planetary emergency exists, because acknowledging it would threaten the profits and power structures that depend on its denial. It’s a bit like smashing your smoke alarm because it may ruin your dinner.

Trump should be stopped by congress now. How do they not see he is actively trying to destroy us ? He knows we all know he’s a pedo rapist and he already hated us all. Now he has more of a reason to hate America. He should be impeached today. Every day he stays in the white house is another day evil wins. All he does is grift and dismantle and destroy. He hasn’t done a single good thing in his life.

I live in an area where tornado frequency has steadily increased over several years now. It’s massively important to keep up with the science as the climate gets more and more volatile.

    Fuck Trump.

Can’t kill the post office? Destroy their sorting machines. Can’t get rid of climate agencies? Sell off their computers. Don’t like a department? Reduce their staff to a single person. The list goes on but you can basically file all of these under malicious compliance or subverting the rules.

Someone send this to Reed Timmer. World famous meteorologist. Voted for Trump based on vibes and is now reaping what he sowed.

Of course we can’t have any evidence of climate warming if all the computers are taken away . He’s trying to remove any way to study the climate

  20. InteractionLittle668 on

TBF, most severe weather issues can be fixed via Sharpie pen. Computers are overrated.

  21. Redshirt_Welshy_Nooo on

The people who will suffer the most immediate and directly causally related harms will be 1) farmers and 2) places with forecastable major natural disaster like the South and tornado alley; two reliably Republican blocs.

I’m just sorry they’re dragging the rest of us down with them. Surely there’s some form of self-harm they can engage in apart from voting Republican that wouldn’t be so damaging to everyone else.

Oligarchs want the US government to stop doing anything at all so they can take over and turn a profit from it. It doesn’t matter if it’s runninig prisons, providing health services or predicting the weather: they want to be the ones doing it and overcharging for it.

The state can do all these things at break-even cost, which is good for everyone, except for the hoarding class at the top who keep wanting more, more, more.

  23. Obvious_Toe_3006 on

    Why ?
Because Trumpers fear these computers lead to „climate change alarmism.“

  24. smalltownlargefry on

FWIW, supercomputers were basically how we were able to confirm that human activity was the root cause of what was progressing global warming/climate change. This administration is trying to kill us.

  25. Academic_Release5134 on

Great, that way private industry can take over and we can pay twice as much for the same information.

  26. I_like_baseball90 on

Not a day goes by where I’m still not shocked that 77 million fucking idiots think this orange POS is their savior.

*reads headline* it’s gotta be ncar

    *reads* is ncar

shame. we visited ncar for cs class in high school, the super computers are visible to the public in their basement. It’s not only a place that did amazing and important work, but one that valued transparency and education while they were at it – not to mention the numerous hiking trails that branch from the property. I still hike there. I hooked up in their parking lot one time. That place is a goddamn treasure to Boulder County and to the people of the United States of America.
