      Look I get that Russia is awful but at the same time if we were writing hundreds of billion checks I would also ask the receiver to do certain things that would stop me from writing further billion dollar checks

      yeah there’s a reason for this. This war is unsustainable. The entire planet is pumping money, weapons and aid into Ukraine (who is not a member of NATO largely due to their history of corruption) just to stave off Russian aggression. There has to be an end to it. It’s not an endless money supply.

      US foreign policy has always been a mix of domestic politics, strategic interests, and alliance management. Reducing it to “someone’s instructions” oversimplifies a very complex system.

      This shouldn’t come as a shock given Ukraine as the country with 20% of its territory occupied by Russia is in a worse position in the negotiations and if you’re in a worse position in negotiations you have less leverage and therefore are expected to offer more concessions. Its easier for Trump to get concessions out of Zelenskyy than Putin due to Ukraine’s position in the war compared to Russia’s.
