    1. I mean…duh? One sport is watched globally, and the other is pretty much concentration to one country.

as a non-American, the super bowl is that event where I never see anything about the sport, but loads about the half time show and the ads

you can’t get more American than getting excited for being advertised to

    3. The average income of the Superbowl viewer is like 6-7 times that of the average worldwide premier league viewer.

The Superbowl is massively more important and lucrative from a market perspective.

    4. A colleague at my work is in hard denial on this to an irrational level.

The weirdest part is they’re really into european football so it’s not just ignorance. I think folks really underestimate how little the rest of the world cares about american football. It’s nothing like basketball for example

    5. What’s the 750M number based on?

The 220M number for the super bowl is the actual viewership because they have marketing firms monitor/survey this stuff

Try the snooker world championship 2025. 4 million in the UK where it was held, around 400 million in China…

    7. Like another comment pointed out, Superbowl viewers are MUCH richer on average than the average association football viewer.

It also can’t be understated that the Superbowl audience is almost all in one country. Despite being a very diverse country, there are shared cultural values and that means advertisements can be more targeted and more effective. The Budweiser free bird ad hit probably 90% of all 220M viewers, while an ad at a soccer game has to cater to a super broad audience, most of which probably isn’t even the right continent for your product.

It’s kind of a microcosm of why the United States is still, despite all the insanity of the last year, the most warping consumer market in the world. Nowhere else can you find 300M+ people with that level of disposable income and that key shared culture aspect.

It’s legitimately impossible to track these numbers. Pubs show matches. People have watch parties. Matches are illegally streamed. 750m people is 9% of the population. When you factor in time zones and the fact that other games were on at the same time in other European leagues I’m going to confidently say I doubt 1 in every 9 people on the planet watched that match especially in a manner that can be tracked.

The timing of the games probably accounts for the huge difference. 11:30 EST 16:30 GMT 00:30 CST for the Liverpool game.
19:00 EST 00:00 GMT 08:00 CST for the Superbowl.

Adjust those viewers for purchasing power- SB ads generate more revenue

Give a kid a soccer ball and nothing else and she can have fun by herself. You have a soccer fan.

Give a boy a football and nothing else. At best you’ve created a punter. Most likely you have an annoyed boy cause he can’t do anything with a football alone.

    12. I think it’s worth noting that the UK being the center of the western world when they created the timezones helps their sports exposure immensely.

Liv v City kicked off at 16:30 GMT, 11:30ET, 13:30 in Brazil, 22:00 in India, etc

The Super Bowl is played after midnight everywhere outside the americas and in the far east it occurs on a Monday morning.

British sports have a huge embedded audience due to colonialism, when you’re tapping all of India for viewership it’s always going to be big

    13. Global sports can get as many viewers as they want, but from a $$$ perspective the value of US consumer market vs the globe isn’t even comparable. Just look at the value of sports team and you will begin to see the size difference.

The upcoming cricket match between Pakistan and India will have a huge audience too
