Incorporating AI systems into medicine, and especially into surgery, is highly risky and dangerous, Because of the number of errors this can cause

    2. And the number of people who couldn’t have seen this coming is astonishingly low and yet I’m sure those involved in the decisions to bring ai into the mix are still surprised.

“Next, remove the left toe with an incision in order to expose the kidney”

“Uh… alexa? We’re doing lung surgery”

“Great question Tim! I could not find ‘Lung Surgery’ on your current Amazon playlist”

We are talking about trained bespoke models, a very different approach to the current GPT craze.

I also have a very bad opinion on the quality of software developed by the medical and bioscience  industry.  They sre the guys that were training a model to predict the worse cancer treatment and they are renaming genes due to ms excell.

In my field (satellite remote imaging), we’ve determined that AI is never better than 90% accurate. That sounds pretty good, but it means that 10% of the time it’s wrong. That’s a horrific error rate for a field that normally has <1% error.

I can’t imagine relying upon it for medicine. You need much, much better error rates there!

Outsource medicine to AI that has no concept of facts and truth. What could possibly go wrong?

But AI is going to make us all more productive and successful…..isn’t it?

    8. If you have to get a surgery I’d make the doctors sign something up front that says they know that you do not consent to have AI devices used on you. This is evidence that that type of tech is already having the error rates everyone expects.

    9. Was it “Married with Children” where they did circumcision instead of circular incision? Poor Al.

Nothing like having an hallucinating prone system taking care of your health. Finally men will have ovaries and women prostate.

Bring on the lawsuits, it’s the only way we can limit the proliferation of misinformation propagated by AI in the OR

    12. Holy misleading ass title.

A hospital attempted to identify fetuses in ultra sound images and the AI image detector didn’t properly identify fetus body.

That’s literally it. Nothing else about the article talks about is related to „misindentified body parts“

Regarding botched surgeries, from the years 2021 to 2025, there have been 100 *unconfirmed* reports of botched surguries, *10 of which* is *suspected* because of an AI system involved.

FDA is unable to confirm any of it was an AI failure or human failure. An ongoing lawsuit is in effect, but no follow-up exists on these allegations.

The problem isn’t that Machine Learning makes errors; the problem is that these systems don’t care when they make errors.

Pattern reignition AI can be used for great effect in cancer detection tho. But

I think that’s on the hospitals for thinking that AI is actually accurate for anything. This is shitty.

Utterly ridiculous. Can’t say I’m surprised that some morons decided that we could trust AI with human lives.

Malpractice suits are gonna go through the roof! A hospital uses AI to do my surgery, when there’s a well qualified doctor on their payroll? Yeah fuck that, i don’t stop until i own someone’s yacht, mansion… their fucking great grandkids will be on welfare. This is nothing more than a greedy Healthcare system trying to increase profit margins…fuck your profit margins.

    18. The anti-vax group who thought the COVID vaccine was rushed is suspiciously quiet about AI surgery.
