Regressive policy. More unnecessary traffic, more stress on infrastructures, more unnecessary emissions. Wasting taxpayer money when there is a giant deficit.

Almost no one outside of the public service has any sympathy for this anymore. We’ve all been back in the office for like 3 years now.
Edit: for the people who think their personal experience is indicative of the rest of the country, it is not. Remote work peaked at 40% at the height of the pandemic and was already down to 20% in 2023
I assume the gov has decided that this is the easiest way to soft fire people without paying out as much severance.
Announce layoffs.
Force people to RTO and watch a bunch of them quit.
Look like a saint when you announce that fewer layoffs were needed than initially planned and budgets have magically improved.

I think changing the messaging about why WFH is good would be useful.
I often see comments about how work from home has been great for the individual worker, how much they save on gas, time, and how they can still do small tasks at home throughout the day. I think that’s great for them, and makes a ton of sense that they talk about their experience. However, it’s not gonna convince other people that RTO shouldn’t happen.
Truth is people are selfish. “I have to go to work, why shouldn’t you?” is really as much thought as they put into it. They don’t care if you have to spend money on gas or that you lost an extra few hours in commute. Why would they? They’re all doing that too.
What they do care about is government savings.
The focus should be more on the amount of money government can save by staying at WFH.
This is great. Federal workers are noticeably bad at their jobs when they work from home. It’s a running joke at this point.

Presumably it’s to get people to take voluntary retirement – except it’s just going to piss off all the younger workers.
Big middle finger to Carney’s constituents. He campaigned on “caps, not cuts” and then cut a bunch of jobs.
His brilliant speech in Davos – again empty words – “Nostalgia isn’t a strategy” well seemingly it is RTO mandates are the definition of workplace nostalgia. The dinosaurs in Ottawa haven’t figured out that the workplace has changed. You can be interconnected anywhere.

I can’t wait to get up almost two hours earlier an extra day a week so that i can be at the office when working on the phone lines, surrounded by other people also having phone conversations dealing with confidential personal information. Brilliant idea /s.
Blanket rules like this are so unnecessary, regressive and sometimes even harmful.

Incoming mass-grievances from the unions. I figure if the government is smart about it, they could trade wage increases for remote-work privileges.

Don’t like it?? Go get another job. From the comments here and r/Ottawa and other places it just proves so much about fed workers.

As anyone who has worked from home will tell you the issue is the RAMPANT ABUSE
There are far too many people who (sadly) just can not work unsupervised.
People abused it and thats why we can never have nice things.

Never understood RTO mandates, my only guess is to boost the economy by having people spend their money through coffee, breakfast, lunches and commuting costs.
Otherwise, all we are accomplishing is congesting our roads and increasing our infrastructure maintenance cost. For a government that preaches we should care about the environment and be green, we are putting a lot of carbon foot print forcing people to commute.
WFH also helps people that actually need to commute by reducing their commute times. And for those that say don’t like it than quit, I don’t understand why you’re against people having a bit of their lives back. This push would ultimately also push for better rewards for those that do need to come in perhaps through compensation or other ways to improve work life balance.
WFH should be norm with out technology advances to reduce the need for driving excessively and spending on infrastructure costs that may not be needed as much that could be allocated to healthcare etc.

I’m all for WFH and wish my job would let me do it more. However I’ve also played video games with friends on my days off who are “working from home,” I’m like oh yeah that’s why some managers hate it. I’ve also gone shopping at Costco, which is like, not a quick trip, with a family member who WFH.
Some people truly will take maximum advantage of their WFH privilege which I AM OKAY WITH cause I’m all for work-life balance, but I can’t say I blame management for wanting more accountability measures.

Edit: Just to be clear I am pro WFH.
Judging from the reaction from the public service, this seems like one area where PP and the Conservatives are clearly more pro-worker than the Liberals: https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/poilievre-public-service-1.7438154
