      The only subscription features available to purchase in my BMW are some crappy games and some traffic camera notifications. Everything is free and included as long as the cell modem doesn’t straight up lose connectivity. Even then if I lose the ability to pre-heat my car from an app, I can just use the keyfob instead.

      Meanwhile Mazda has taken away the ability to remote start your car with a keyfob and has made is available through a subscription app only.

      This is entering into government intervention territory. If I spent tens of thousands of dollars on a car then that car company decides to make me subscribe to monthly payments for features like heated seats I’d be fucking pissed.

      I don’t like excessive government control but this is getting ridiculous.

      There’s probably going to be a demand for ‘vintage’ cars.

      And I don’t mean as rare exotic or historical vehicles either.

      I mean ‘vintage’ cars that don’t capture your metadata, or require a subscription to use features that already existed and don’t require any service.

      Subscriptions for power windows, heated seats, subscriptions to turn on. Or cars that know more about you than your own doctor.

      Unfortunately this means all new cars will have subscriptions soon. No one is going to save us as everything is just getting worse for the consumer daily. Subscriptions on cars honestly seems like a logical next step in firmly pressing their boots on our necks. Hopefully this means in 30 years no one will be allowed to actually own anything and we will live in corpo debt having to pay Amazon a fee so we can turn the lights on in our homes. Capitalism fucking rules and technology is always on our side. Fuck yeah!!!!!

      We leased an X3 and when rates were insane during Covid it just made financial sense to buy out the car.

      3 months later navigation and traffic, remote services like remote cooling/fan start, the ability to connect Spotify, and other functions just… disappeared.

      Dealer said I had to purchase BMWConnect or some bullshit.

      Last BMW we’ll ever own.

      If it’s for a service that has an on-going expense for BMW – then, that’s fine with me. Something like OnStar or a satellite service, that makes sense.

      If it’s unlocking hardware, like the heated seats, or even software with no on-going maintenance required – then that’s a hard no from me, no matter what brand or model it is.

      I ditched my BMW years ago and as nice as it was, would never buy another. This merely seals the fate of that decision.

      Legislation to state if it comes with a physical feature, the feature is enabled and considered purchased at the time of sale, not a subscription based service.

      The quickest way to stick it to companies like this is to hit them in the revenue they were projecting from a move like this. Wipe it out overnight, let them go to their shareholders meeting and explain why the dividends are much, much lower than anticipated. The people who came up with that idea will have to explain their reasoning at their next job interview, and the one after that and so on.
