It looks like he made a case to potentially discuss auto factory closure in his riding, but it was reiterated to him by the government that, of course, he has no authority over anything.
Curious if he actually went above Poilievre for this though.

Edit – National Post wrote an article about this, and Joly sounds way less enthusiastic from the quotes they used. Seems like he was invited to attend the National Prayer Breakfast as well, which would likely be where he would meet up with Vance if he does.

I would recommend the current government pass laws that forbid this kind of thing. People who were not elected to lead this country should not be conducting foreign diplomacy in any way.

Honestly, what fruits does Jivani’s trip and rhetoric intend to bear? He has lunch with JD Vance, tells him “Bro, cut it out”, with Vance replying “You’re right, bro, sorry”, then returning to Canada a hero?
I expect him to return from his trip, and spin all the problems to be really coming from Canada somehow negotiating unfairly in all this. That the US is just doing what’s best for them, and that Canada should be doing the same, but we somehow lack the leadership. Then the angry conservative base gets angry and proceeds to blame Carney.
In an ideal world, Jivani would see firsthand the issues Canada is facing negotiating with a bad faith US, then call for conservatives to stand united during this time for the sake of our sovereignty. But this trip benefits no one except Jivani and his future CPC leadership ambitions.

This is 100% just a political stunt that will most likely result in nothing positive happening. It’s likely that this will cause unnecessary chaos since it seems like he is going rouge without approval/consent from the liberal party or his own conservative party.

Jamil strikes me as much more committed to the broad conservative movement on both sides of the border, then he is on standing up for Canadian interests. People like this generally aren’t fond of many things that differentiate Canada from the US that a large majority of Canadians actually cherish. Ex. Universal healthcare, a broader social safety net, less gun violence etc. They would prefer if Canada adopted policies that are very much in line with what the Trump administration is doing, with maybe a slightly softer touch in public.
I am confident this is not an attempt to improve relations between the countries. At best, it is a political exercise to get the CPC and Jivani himself in the news and try to control some of the narrative that they have lost since Carney took power. At worst, and I really do fear this, it is a deliberate attempt by the CPC to share intel and solicit help to weaken the Canadian economy and improve the chances of a more Trump-friendly government getting elected in Canada.

He is buddies with JD Vance. I don’t trust him at all. He is a typical Conservative rage farmer. He is dangerous in my opinion

No one else thinks the timing of this is highly suspicious? Harper has been in the news for the past 2 weeks. Poilievre suddenly wants a meeting with Carney. Now this?

haahah, oh was it?!?
The guy is bad faith personified. He’s a Charlie Kirk debate bro whose main claim to fame is that he’s good friends with a politician famous for giving up everything he ever stood for so he could gain more power. He’s spent the last year travelling the country staging weird little bad faith events to promote his merchandise and attack his political opponents.
It’s like he was built in a lab to not be trusted.
