    1. This seems like such an odd match to me. I don’t know the person at all but going from the super-left provincial NDP to the Right ++ of the federal liberals suggests to me it’s not an ideological move.

    2. This is pretty insane news, probably the least likely candidate I would have predicted to run for the Liberals here. It was never going to be a competitive race federally, but it’s somehow even less competitive now.

The real interesting story is what happens provincially. This will be a significant blow for the Ontario NDP, and will be a difficult seat for them to hold. Then again, ONDP candidates crashed and burned during the last federal election, while OLP candidates were very successful, despite the opposite happening provincially.

      > provincial NDP’s deputy leader

Dang, that’s a blow to the NDP.

    4. Doly Begum is the current **deputy leader of the ONDP**, and she’s been attached to the party for 8 years at this point. Such a crazy get, and another unfortunate blow to the NDP.

Surprised another provincial New Democrat is willing to try this after what the Liberals did to Rod Loyola in Edmonton.

I like Marit Styles and all, but the ONDP is not going to topple Ford and the OPC. Just like with the conservative floor crossers, I really dont find it that surprising that politicians are willing to compromise on some of their positions to escape their hamstrung parties.

A curious choice. As someone who knows nothing about her personally, my first assumption would be that she senses the ONDP under Stiles is stagnating and will probably revert back to 3rd place if the OLP manages to pick a halfway-competent leader in their next race. I cant help but wonder whats going on behind the scenes in the ONDP, not exactly a good sign…

Hopefully she can serve her constituents better than Bill Blair at the very least (which granted is not a very high bar).

    8. This is going to ruffle some feathers in /r/ndp. The Democratic socialist faction of the federal party refuses to acknowledge that a big chunk of the provincial NDP folks are federal liberals.

Just like that, Scarborough Southwest is without its two elected representatives due to opportunism, less than a year after they were both elected.

    10. Do party members get paid for being party members? Can i just join the NDP and get paid? How can i join them? I want free moolah.

Federal Liberal party is a huge tent these days, This will help them with NDP voters in Ontario too which is great for them

    12. While the article, in true Toronto Star fashion, is satisfied to describe Ms. Begum as „the first Bangladeshi-Canadian representative in any Canadian legislature,“ I’ve always found giving primacy to ethnic and national identity when trying to explain what is important and core to a representative…. disappointing.

Ms. Begum holds a BA in political science from UofT, and an MA in development, administration, and planning from University College London, a strong British university.

Her brief three year pre electoral career was in management of a community centre, a co-chair in a Toronto healthcare advocacy NGO, a co-chair of the campaign against Hydro privatization, and analyst for an energy NGO.

She’s held several critic roles in the ONDP, and of course has since been deputy leader.

She is reasonably young, which means she may hold this seat for a long while. She certainly has reasonable qualifications to be an MP, though like Harper and Poilievre, appears to have never worked outside of the political sphere. That’s no inherently a bad thing, though, as she will have developed a reasonable breadth of knowledge of important files from her career thus far.
