Looks like Thailand was a bit of a colonial power itself, ruling over Cambodians, Shan, and Laotians (although I think Laotians are related to the Thai…)

the Thai or siam at the time only claimed the part of eastern Shan state, they never actually controlled it, The Burmese army was stationed there, the closet they came to controlling the region was when they tried to invade to legitimize their claim and failed

And I think the Khmer king was also independent, or definitely was not controlled directly by the Central Thais,

So the bits around Malaya are misleading. Siam doing it’s own colonialism.

Tell me you learn history from Thailand sources without admitting that’s your only source

    5. Everytime this map is posted europeans just flock in and activate defensive mode.

They can’t differentiate being ruled by foreign powers and being an extraction colony.
