I suspect that this type of drone ambush will increase. Eventually it will include AI activation and control, at which point they are basically smart mines. A tiny acoustic and/or vibraton sensor, or PIR draws almost no power, and can sit by a road out of view, until it identifies a target, at which point they would fly up, locate, and attack. I am sure that armored vehicles can be mostly id’d from their acoustic profile alone, and visual should provide confirmation. When this is common, I don’t know how assaults, no matter how meat wave heavy, will get anywhere.

But I also think it will make life hellish for airfields etc. Smallerish FPV drones could be dropped by long range drone, and land maybe 5 km from an airfield. They could possible monitor activity via acoustics, and when the time is right, fly right to the field in minutes and hit the juiciest target. Even a jet that just landed would have enough fuel left to burn nicely, … and if taxiing for take-off fully fuelled and bomb ladened, … it would be fiery. I am actually surprised we haven’t seen some half hearted effort to try something like that. Even if not successful, it will increase precautions, and slow operational tempo. A modified TFL-1 would probably do, and some basic image nav following the easy to identify runway shapes and towers and radars etc.
