The people complain that the foreigners will take those low-paying jobs instead of companies raising salaries so that locals can take these jobs and actually make a living

    1. What? Are you trying to reason with populist losers? If they could understand logic, they wouldn’t be populists, would they?

Where is the actual article? It’s just an unsourced quote and a comment section.

  4. There may be voters who say a lot because they are in the middle of an election campaign right now. But what worries me is not whether I have a job or not. If you come to work and everyone lives happily, there’s no problem. However, we do not want to make it as unsafe as European countries to not be able to walk freely at night.

In Kanagawa I see a lot of construction crews with SE Asians and Sri lankans tearing down old houses. Smashing concrete blocks with sledgehammers, scrapping roofing off, dismantling beam by beam. It’s dangerous work day to day, low pay long hours breathe in all the toxic dust from 70s construction materials. There’s no swath of the Japanese population yearning for those jobs.

Same with Sri Lankans in the junk yards here recycling cars and transmission fluids, etc. I’m making broad generalizations to be sure, but I’m pretty sure we all have seen those folks hard at work trying to make a living for themselves. They are not stealing any job I know of that a Japanese person typically says they want. But all the voting population(older japanese generations to a good extent) see is replacement and conflate that with foreigners somehow „taking away“ from Japan and not sustaining Japan.

I hear Americans or European right wingers complain about foreigners taking jobs but not in Japan. The unemployment rate is very low and there are plenty of jobs here and not even right wingers say that. It would be very rare if anyone say that.
