  1. > “Here’s the thing — this risks killing any mystery around it, but I really don’t look at it as promotion or marketing. I see myself as an artist expanding,” Chalamet said. “And certainly the Zoom had a little bit of satire to it, but the initial video in the glass box, those [ping-pong ball] heads, I feel like I’m expressing myself. You know, a lot of people want to be told what to say, how to say it and where to stand — I’m talking on the acting front. Also, people don’t want to misstep. I feel like I’ve got the keys, I’ve got the right attitude, I’ve got the juice.”

    > “I spent over six figures out of my pocket to do the ‘SNL’ performance,” Chalamet said. “Lorne Michaels said, ‘Hey, do you want to host “SNL”?’ I said, ‘Yeah, can I do the music?’ He’s like, ‘No.’ I said, ‘Alright, I’m not doing it.’ He said, ‘OK, do the music.’ But I refused to take no for an answer.”

    > He continued: “This is the new way of doing stuff. I’m trying to reach audiences, you know. I don’t want to be in the pretentious in-crowd. ‘Marty Supreme’ in America had the least frequent moviegoing audience this year — people that weren’t going to see everything. That’s my favorite feedback on the movie. So the most pretentious answer I could give you, which I actually honestly feel, is that it’s not marketing or promotion. That sounds like a gimmick, and this is not a gimmick. This is coming from my heart and my soul.”

Like six figures to be on SNL or just to pay the band to perform the music?

Maybe just focus on being a better actor instead of all the things that great actors get? I like the guy, but jesus, he really expects the be treated like one of the greats and he hasn’t become one yet.

  4. I don’t really understand the Chalamet hate.

He’s a great actor who is spending a ton of energy (and apparently his own money) towards bringing more attention to movies. He’s making fun, original movies, taking risks with marketing and promoting, etc. like, what more do we want from our actors?

Do you guys even like movies?

  5. His way of answering questions is all over the place, and that’s sort of interesting.

Sometimes, when people are on press junkets for their movie, they tell the same exact story in 3 out of 5 interviews. That’s a bit planned and pretentious, isn’t it?

He has this idea so clearly in his head that he can’t explain it well. I can relate, I have a tendency to lose my train of thought or get derailed completely. But when someone who is *used* to talking in front of lots of people or has answered similar questions often does this, it seems real and not an act. But who knows, he’s a pretty good actor.

I did find his idea about award shows interesting, though. His attendance is advertising for all the movies and actors nominated, because someone might watch just for him, but realize that other movie sounds interesting. And that’s sort was the other thing I found interesting about this interview: he’s all about getting butts in the seat *at the theater.* I honestly haven’t had a lot of desire to go to a theater lately, and if he and other actors can help that ailing industry, that might be a good thing.

God this dude is insufferable. The in crowd comment while he’s dating a fucking kardashian is chefs kiss in his lack of self awareness.

  7. I don’t want to be in the pretentious in crowd? Isn’t he dating a Kardashian?

  8. I feel like he’s gonna crash out like Shia LaBeouf did. The comparisons are uncanny.

Tim Chalamet seems like a guy you meet at a party who’s a little too much, but great in small doses.

  11. If he doesn’t want to come off pretentious, he should just stay away from responding to the press.

  12. orangefilmgarden on

He spent six figures on movie promotion and none on a PR person to coach him in how to talk to the press, and it shows.
