Only four years ago – but a completely different war than we see today.
I assume today, Russia couldn’t even field such an attack even if they wanted to anymore.

Russian soldiers on board must have felt unstoppable.
Highly trained, motivated and equipped.
Didn’t last long though.

Bet they were singing that really stupid VDV song when they went down.

That is fascinating footage. IIRC when they pulled the helicopter out the reservoir months later, the pilot was still strapped in
I wonder how many of those VDV survived their stay at Hostomel Airport. Putin really believed he was going to take Kyiv

The yelling when it goes down still gives me chills.. So beautiful.

This will forever be an example how hard military planning is.
How to asses whether your intel is correct? How do you know your planned operation is too slow and cumbersome, just right and effective, daring or just balls to walls crazy and suicidal.
And how to asses how the enemy will react, will they run, give token resistance or come at you with everything and the kitchen sink?
Reality is a tough teacher, as the Russians learned the hard way at Hostomel.
It’s crazy seeing footage public that I have known existed for a while. There is a longer version of this and of the assault on Hostomel. The assault troops where making cracks about it being like a Vietnam Helicopter assault. I hope some of those videos get publicly posted soon.

And hours later the ones dying in the streets of Kiev regretted to not have crashed themselves into the lake.
But no we could talk about it. We had to appease Putin while his cannibals went prehistoric on Bucha.

As an outsider it just feels like they blew up their own proffesional army in the span of the first 6 months ish, now they are left with orc meat waves that are not really soldiers

I’m sure they felt like fucking badasses, nothing but token resistance, soon, this country would be having them parading in victory…
Bet those two helicopters slamming into the water shattered that visage.

Impressive. And the reception they got was even more impressive.
Thanks for posting this, OP.

Any word on any follow up on the 2 choppers shot down that day? Did Ukraine have to go and pull the wreckage from the reservoir and finding any Orcs still strapped to their seats?

Would anyone mind giving the time that the second helicopter gets hit or goes into the water? I’ve seen this clip many times and I only ever see the one that gets hit at 0:44 and drops into the water at 0:49 but I’ve never noticed when the second one goes in

Let’s also not forget the 50-ish VDV elite soldiers that were dropped in the Black Sea outside of Odessa.
What ever happened to all of the VDV troopers from the initial assault in Feb 2022? Are all of them dead or wounded by now? I absolutely LOVE seeing these videos, they must have felt so invincible on the way in. Rumor was they had their parade uniforms in their packs for the victory parade in Kiev.

Still gives me goosebumps. Watching all those helicopters come for you, to conquer you, to kill you… and then see two get hit. What a hopeful moment is such a desperate moment in time.

Is it common tactic to only start flaring after your squadron took shots, or is it protocol to start flaring beforehand alrady?
Because the fact that they only start flaring after two of their choppers went down will never not be funny to me. „Oh shit, I didn’t expect them to actually fire back wtf.“

I think hostomel is still the most significant battle of the war.
It became clear that the Russians could not just show up and say ok guys hands up now.
Remember the first columns coming in from the north and running out of gas – Russian soldiers and Ukranian civilians were casually talking about it and laughing about on the road.
It turned sour fast when Bayraktar did its thing and vdv ambushed near Kyiv
