I hate the man, but this is not a half bad idea. Churchill is connected via rail, it has an established airport and it has an operating port. It’s a good place to create a base.

should logically be the southernmost arctic base as the farthest north port with a rail connection to the mainland; especially as climate change will leave it increasingly ice-free. defense of the north and defense of the arctic archipelago are distinct but related problems; this base would help both

    3. Churchill is much too far south in that sense; its primary role is as a relatively southern arctic port. In terms of power projection we’d want something at like Tuktoyaktuk in the high arctic (which is why an all-season road was recently built there) or maybe Baffin Island. But then again, Churchill is a lot easier to supply.

Churchill should be a submarine base too. Maybe that large island in the NW of Hudsons Bay as a larger scale forces base.

    5. I’ll be honest as someone in the navy I loathe the idea if being posted to Churchill… Would probably have me thinking of leaving if I was told I was going to be based there.

The issue is cost. We need the port of Churchill and we should be heavily investing in it but a base would cost a lot. Probably hundreds of billions depending on the base. It’s not just construction its supplies and use.

For it be more than a glorified radar station it will need to be naval or airforce, and it’ll probably be RCAF or a combination of both. Which means hangers, runways, workshops, deicing, snow clearance and hundreds of personal to maintain, repair and operate the fleet and base. And a naval yard, icebreaker, support ships, and a naval base that can repair ships and submarines. Otherwise theres no real point. And we’d need security to deal with polar bears.

It would likely put pressure on Churchill to which has a population of less than 1000. But hey it may be good it may be bad for the town.

Then theres supplying costs. Theres rail, probably a small airport, and in the winter an ice highway to get to Churchill. So a lot of stuff is going to have to be flown in during construction, to equip the base and then just basic supplies.

To be clear we should do this. But we can’t have a half assed idea thrown around at a party convention about this. We need to commit. We need to commit to spending at least tens of billions and probably a decade to build it.
