This is a deeply complex situation but there may just be a small chance for democracy to return to Venezuela.

Look, only a fucking idiot would believe anyone in the Trump administration actually cares about democracy anywhere for the sake of it but Rubio is at least an intelligent politician, he knows the Venezuelan regime is profoundly unpopular among Latin Americans in the US and toppling it with a return to democracy would be a huge boost to his standing and cement a presidential run in 2026. And generally, a free democracy in Venezuela would naturally be very pro US, Chavismo is profoundly unpopular at this point, the US goverment would actually be fairly popular in that outcome.

If things just remained as they are until 2026, could Rubio manage a transition? maybe.

The issue is, will Trump live for three more years? kind of seems unlikely. Would Vance just leave Rubio to do his own thing here, would he care for this issue at all or would he just punt Rubio as a potential candidate for elections?

Would there even really be US elections in 2026?

Good news. Maybe a lot of Venezuelan exiles in Miami will move back and help the country succeed.

Any major opposition leaders who stayed in the country are in this group. This is very good if they’re allowed to actually organize and then run formal and fair elections.

They also said they have plans to close El Helicoide, the regime’s main torture center, and turn it into a social, sports, cultural, and commercial complex.
