    1. Going across busy shipping lanes, across the current, Irish weater…the expense would never be recouped…so no, it’s a bad idea and maybe DL needs a different identity than just boat

    2. Heh, funny choosing Sydney as the stock image and in the text for comparison. The Harbour literally divides the city unlike Dublin with water on one edge.

The ferries also mainly serve the local area as a modal transfer to the jetty via bus adds too much time compared to for example staying on a bus along a notoriously bad traffic corridor in Military Rd.

    3. *County Councillor John Kennedy, who says the journey by ferry between the two ports takes just five minutes.*

The distance between Dún Laoghaire and Dublin Port in a straight line is 6.5km. A ferry covering that distance in 5 minutes would have to go at 78km/h. The usual speed of a normal ferry is between 12 to 20 knots (22 to 37 km/h).

John Kennedy stop wasting our time and work on real world proven solutions.

    4. There used to be a ferry that did a touristy trip around the bay. One of the options was Dun Laoghaire to the city centre. It was nice as a once off but I can’t imagine it did the numbers that would make a route viable.

There’s just no way in hell this is viable. Can’t see many people opting to get on a ferry on a Janauary morning instead of the Dart.

Surely theres better transport proposals to use your voice for?

    6. Iirc this was suggested back in the 90s/00s. Two private individuals applied for permission after sourcing and buying a „waterbus“ in Amsterdam (if memory serves). Planned route was DL to city centre. Ended up being refused as there was concerns about interference with shipping lanes.

In Sydney, the ferry from Circular Quay (Sydney Opera House, Harbour Bridge) to Manly makes sense because it’s much faster and more convenient than going by land, but I can’t imagine a ferry from DL to town is faster or more convenient than the Dart.

    8. I was thinking a ferry from Dún Laoghaire to circular quay in Sydney and you might get some more patronage…

That man has never been on a boat in his life. It would take more than five to get out of the bloody harbour

I vote we install a tube transport system like the one they have in Futurama.

Quite absurd haha. Staten Island is an island (the clue is in the name Neale) and North Sydney is functionally an island. And the service in London is barely solvent a certainly not a major part of the transport system (mostly used by tourists and a few rich locals who find it more pleasant).

Happy for a private company to have a stab at it but not sure why the council or the government would get involved. Idk maybe there’s like 50 rich people who normally drive from DL into town because they’re too good for the Dart who might be wooed by a premium ferry service instead.

This is a real the boom is back kind of idea , but the boom isn’t back , and this councillor is a tool.

The rich on the south side don’t want to get a dart with the plebs , they want their own boat service

I think it’s a great idea for east coast commuter towns if the ferry was suitable for our climate and the fare cost was kept low. Any infrastructure improvement is welcome.

Not gonna lie, it’s a great idea that’ll put a lot of people in work. Just awful timing considering how shit the country is with roads.

Isn’t there a private boat operates certain times on that route? Thought I saw that at Din Laoire peir last year sometime

There is no way it would take 5 minutes but
Always nice to hear from a fucking idiot on a topic he knows nothing about.

It would be at least 3 or 4 times that actually travel unless he’s invented a ferry that goes motorway speeds. With slowing down for docking, getting up to speed in the first place, moving slowly in no-wake zones near and around docks and inside the harbour then people embarking, disembarking etc.

      Invest in the dart.

Would absolutely love to take a ferry instead of the dart for my commute to the office
