What Japan really needs to do if they want to defend Taiwan is not rely on America anymore. They should create a defensive military alliance with their democratic neighbors (South Korea, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, and maybe Philippines). Resolve all the issues with South Korea. And if she really wants nuclear weapons it should be jointly controlled and developed by this alliance with each member having veto power if they are used or not (or at least develop a doctrine that every member agrees to).
