      Sounds like he’s afraid of being out of a job if the EU replaces NATO without the US.

      It’s worth mentioning that the combine forces in the EU closely match those of the US yet Ukraine has made it obvious that Russia cannot live up to their military propaganda.

      Defend against whom? Russia can’t take Ukraine so its no conventional threat to western Europe. If it tried to attack the Baltics then it would be beaten by European air-power alone.

      China isn’t a conventional military threat either. Is he talking about nukes?

      Edit: Yep, he’s talking nukes. The French have an independent deterrent. Expanding that wouldn’t cost double defence European defence spending especially with the UK having independent warhead manufacture too.

      Russia made the same sort of assumption of Europe: The EU will do fuck all about Ukraine because they are too dependent on Russia and its energy. It took 3-4 years to detach but the EU showed the middle finger to Russia and worked out how to get rid of almost all Russian energy imports to date and keeps working on completely get rid of it in the next 1-2 years.

      The US now says the same thing: The EU cannot defend itself and we need the US… Well, we may not be as strong without the US but there is no current threat that we could not deal with right away (Russia proved over the last few years they are incompetent), and any other threats are not that imminent that Europe couldn’t spend a few years to spin up the war industry and beef up the military.

      Assuming Europe *must* have the US as an ally because otherwise the EU is lost is just wrong.

      Defend Europe against whom exactly? Russia? They’re currently sending donkeys to the front lines in Ukraine.

      China? How is China going to get there?

      Really the only credible threat to Europe is an America outside of NATO.

      Keep in mind that Rutte’s only job is to keep NATO together.

      NATO was set up so every party had a piece of the puzzle for their common defense.

      So, although I agree that it wouldn’t be a bad idea for Europe to spend more on military, I’m not sure who the direct threat is.

      EU – spends about 450 billion on military.

      UK- spends about 60 billion on military.

      Canada (NATO) – 62 billion on militarily.

      Total (Even without the US)- 572 billion

      Russia- 149 billion (that’s while they’re at war with Ukraine, so higher than normal)

      China- 247 billion (may be higher depending on sources)

      Total- 396 billion

      Again, it would be prudent to spend more seeing the state of the world, but it’s not like Europe is significantly behind it’s enemies in any way. What is more concerning is the lack defense infrastructure, factories etc, which will take some years to build up anyway. Am I missing something?

      He actually suggested that 10% of GDP is the necessary amount for Europe to be able defend itself, which is so completely ludicrous that it beggers belief, especially coming from the actual, real life NATO chief. It’s so ridiculous that it makes Rutte impossible to take seriously.

      10% of GDP is „we want to become the global military hegemon“ level, not „we want to defend ourselves from Russia“ level. At 10%, the combined military spending of EU would be *$2.25 TRILLION*. The US military budget is, for reference, approximately $1 trillion. It’s a notion completely divorced from reality. Even 3.5% spending would put EU defense spending at $800 billion, and that’s not including any non-EU nato nations like the UK or Norway.

      They have to go through a nuclear capable neighbor first. They also don’t need to attack Europe and are more likely to look at Taiwan. Especially with the current admin doing everything but reassuring Taiwan.

      India? Pakistan? Neither is interested and both have the other as a concern.

      The only country that is a viable threat to NATO right now that has actually threatened it is… the US.
      So maybe on that front, sure…
