The US President had promised to slap extra levies on US imports from European allies over their response to his demands to take ownership of the Arctic island.
But Trump announced that he was dropping the threat after he secured the “framework of a future deal” on Greenland with Nato secretary-general, Mark Rutte.
Ahead of the announcement, senior Nato officials told *The i Paper* that Trump could use US support for [Ukraine](https://inews.co.uk/topic/ukraine?ico=in-line_link) as leverage to secure the Danish territory.
In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, Trump said: “Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and, in fact, the entire Arctic Region.
“This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations. Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st.
“Additional discussions are being held concerning The Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland. Further information will be made available as discussions progress.”
Downing Street refused to comment on the decision on Wednesday night.
It came after Sir Keir Starmer delivered a rare attack against the US President during Prime Minister’s Questions over his attempts to seize Greenland, insisting he “will not yield” over the issue.

there is no support for Ukraine from this administration. Trump is however willing to sell USA weapons and he doesn’t care if those weapons wind up in Ukraine.

Are the US even giving support to Ukraine now? I thought that all they are doing now is allowing other countries to buy some weapons to donate.

NATO officials ***feared***… … …
That’s all NATO officials can do nowadays. Fear. Fear to get dirty. Fear to actually need to fight. Fear of sending in troops before a ceasefire is reached. Fear of being let down by their political sphere who doesn’t have the kahoonas to face their electorates and did what carney did – tell them the truth, that things are not ok, and that they will need to face discomfort. Fear of being defunded. Fear of America pulling out too fast. Fear of it becoming evident to everyone that NATO isn’t fit for purpose and its assurance not worth the paper it’s written on. Fear of a member being invaded, and NATO’s generals finding out the US won’t honor its commitments.
You can’t fight Europe’s enemies from a place of fearing your own shadow, let alone an actual kinetic confrontation.
NATO is nothing more than a standards, administrative and coordination organisation worth measly $4bn. It doesn’t have a military, rather, being allocated slices of various national militaries to train to combine capabilities and work together.
Let’s throw the whole thing in the can and brand the coalition of the willing supporting Ukraine NATO 2.0.
Will there be capability gaps? Yes. For a time. Would they be tolerable? For at least half a decades as Russia figures out how to get its infantry something better than horses, probably.
Want to be a part of the new assurance? Start by being willing. If you’re not part of the willing, the coalition of the willing is not for you. And be ready to be kicked the F out, if you go from being willing to threatening allies, or to making a mockery out of everyone’s collective security by demanding tithes and bribes to do the bleeding obvious.
We have a not hypothetical, working, battle-tested security model. It is protecting Ukraine and Europe already. Drop the theatrics, admit what’s broken is broken, and invest further energy standardizing, combining capabilities and training together in what works.
