Carney is getting global praise at an event that PP wouldn’t even have shown up at.
Speeches don’t put food on the table for the needy.
Speeches don’t put jobs in the hands of youth.
Speeches don’t reduce insane housing and rent costs.
I asked my maga cousin who lives in Atlanta, if in one year’s time trump doesn’t provide any tangible results that benefit the nation, will you still support him?
I’d ask that same question to those raving about a speech while the wealth gap increases.

I’m not sure why some people are so desperate to make this speech to make the PM look bad. It was objectively a great speech that summed up what’s happening right now.
Its not just a speech, its a blueprint of how canada going to conduct itself on the global stage and an invitation to other middle power to join if they wish so.
I changed my opinion (in a better way) about Carney after his speach.
Makes us so proud to see Canada so respected on the world stage!
As a conservative, I can agree Mark made a very good speech. I just hope his speeches turn into reality.

The r/ehbuddyhoser post about this speech being a Canadian heritage moment is honestly pretty apt. Carney just raised the bar for future PMs and world leaders in general; when was the last time any prime minister/president/head of state was this clear about the state of the world?

It was a fine speech. But Obama gave fine speeches too and we saw how that turned out.
We need actual solutions to our problems and we need them yesterday, and I’m not seeing that.

Still not a fan of the liberal party, it’ll take me more than an admittedly great speech to win me over after the last 10 years.
But god damn did it feel nice to be able to feel proud of how a leader represents us on the world stage.
One of those moments that should be shown in classrooms across the country. This is what a Prime Minister should sounds like
Not a comment on the speech, but I will point out that the headline is quoting Kovrig, and it’s amusing how fast this is being upvoted considering how this sub usually tells me that nothing he has to say is worth anything.
It was so smart. He said some scathing things without naming names or insulting language. It was a masterclass in class.
Donald Trump is an idiot
Let’s ensure we follow it up with the requisite action.
Imagine where we would be if PP was elected.
Yes we need more industry and pipelines and self efficiencies that the liberals opposed. But the only the conservatives would have got that done would have been to side step due diligence and consultations and we would be no better than the American.
Even the hardest conservatives must see that being in lockstep with the Americans right now would devastating to our global diplomatic relations and future economy. We would be seen as the weak lap dog cowering under the feet of America. Carney isn’t perfect but he’s the right man for the job right now.
Carney is showing off Canadian Identity on the world stage in bold brash way, it’s refreshing.
An inspiring speech. The best leader we could hope for Canada during this chaotic timeline.

Mark Carney, is to me, the standard in which a political leader and world leader should conduct him or her self. This was a very inspiring speech.
To think we could have ended with Pierre Poopoo, we dodged a bullet there!
Compare Carney’s speech to Trump’s Davos speech a day later.
Carney speaks eloquently and inclusively, staying on point and motivating other countries to action. Meanwhile Trump drones for over an hour about the evils of windmills and “stupid people”. 🤦♂️
This sub sure has changed feelings on this guy.
This could be another Iron Curtain speech. He is not claiming that the world has become two camps. It was a reshuffle of camps.
How long until Trump starts babbling about how best his speeches are, many people say, with tears in their eyes?
My family had the nerve to call him an empty suit.
The best thing we can be right now is predictable. That’s what will drive investment and trade deals and partnerships. Carney laid out exactly what we are going to do, which means other countries can trust us.
It was a good speech, I just hope that other countries take it to heart. Right now most middle powers are only focused on trying to appease America and to get back in their good graces. Carney can see that isn’t going to happen under this administration, and the middle powers need to both focus on their own sovereignty and security, and also band together to support each other rather than caving to every demand in hopes it will win them favour among the super powers.
The problem is, that strategy requires the others cooperate as well
I hope we take the lead on this vision, and set up the instituons to make this a reality and invite as many countries to participate.
I’m not normally a fan of Carney or the LPC, but thank goodness we at least have an adult leading us
Hear hear! As a US citizen and proudly voting against the petulant septuagenarian orange, this is the medicine the US needs. Multilateralism that excludes us when need be is the best idea.
I’ve cried over politics twice in my lifetime (as a child of the 80’s):
When the world wished us well on 9/11 and NATO went to the mat for us after we called for an Article 5 response I realized the world I grew up in was gone; and
This speech from Carney. IMHO he’s absolutely right, but it’s gutting to hear how far we’ve fallen.

After that speech, i am happy to have voted for him.
The speech was ok but its crazy he would preach about human rights and international rules and laws right after getting in bed with Qatar and China. China kidnaps and kills people that disagree or calls out the government. They have a million Uyguhrs imprisoned in re education camps and have tortured and harassed millions of Uyghurs people are accusing them of genocide. China is also the second biggest ecomony calling them a middle power is a stretch. What China is trying to do or doing to Taiwan and Hong Kong is worse than what USA is trying to do to Greenland but theres no mention of that. China is also known for its spying and being sneaky and treating its people like controlled robots. Qatar uses borderline slaves and hates women and gays who have next to no rights. Pretty crazy to cozy up with a country his kid Sasha would not be welcomed in and probably would be arrested but hey I guess brookfield billions mean more to him than his own child.
This is being applauded in the same way one would applaud “the meek shall inherit the earth”.
Middle powers (today and for decades) will have no real military or economic power as compared to China or the US. Military only as compared to Russia.
Middle powers can only play off the two major powers if the major powers allow that. Middle powers can be forced and can comply or face the consequences.
Admitting the obvious is great, but that also removes the Trump blame. If it’s always been this way but done with nice words (Obama) then Trump only says the quiet part out loud. If wrong before, wrong now. Cool. Welcome to my view do years.
His justifications can also work for internal Canada politics: if a Provence is not being considered a partner within Confederation why can they also not separate and be pragmatic ?
Lastly, the announcements of what Canada is doing is just that: words. We have no actions. We had to create a new government organization to help major projects navigate other government agencies…how about fixing the process?
The major projects are rehashes of previous projects. We are last in productivity, Mexico says they can’t work with us due to buerocaxy
Time to get some europe deals on the go. I’ve also wanted more work with brazil since it could be a good place to sell potash and buy produce from
I was hoping the leaders Carney spoke to while giving this speech were listening and understanding what was being said but I guess not.
Those leaders stayed, sat with their signs in their windows and clapped at the end of that tyrants speech. Some even stood in ovation.
That was there time to show a unified new front. I wish they did just that.
He did say that if the USA won’t lead, Canada will. I guess this is it.
