We never should’ve given this port away. It’s frustrating that we keep pumping money into something that we gave away. It should be fast tracked though.
My brother has worked up in this community for almost 20 years and has a unique perspective on Churchill. It is inevitable that Churchill is going to hold a more significant role in the future strictly based on its geography. It’s centrally located on the North American continent with deep seaport access to the Arctic Ocean which means that as temperatures rise and ice melts, it’s going to grow into a central shipping hub between Asia, Europe, and the Americas. And it’s going to be fiercely encroached upon and defended.
And there’s been more visitors lately that he describes as “green men” – government/military teams examining the seabed and landscape surveying for portlands and railroads. I wonder what Churchill will look like in a century or two (assuming the changing climate and world geopolitical order doesn’t collapse humanity into extinction).
This looks very scary!
I totally think the Churchill port should be redeveloped and expanded, it makes a ton of sense for exporting items that come from the prairie provinces.
However using Greenland as the excuse makes no sense! If the US does take control of Greenland, that means they can control both exits to the Arctic Ocean, and that would be a knock to a Churchill port.
Of course, this is a no-brainer. Arctic is almost ice free, why would we not want to have a large deep water port on that coast? What Greenland has to do with this I’m not sure…

A port that is closed to maritime traffic for 8 months of the year better not be our „only hope“!
We can split hairs about how long it will be until that drops to 7 months, but I can’t see investors putting money into this, in such a competitive investment market.
