UBC’s endowment reached three billion dollars last year yet they constantly demand more funding.
There needs to be a serious discussion on having theme focused universities. All schools can offer some main core engineering, nursing, etc., but specialized focuses like animal/food science that were once the focus of a school like Guelph, should go back to that model.
Not every university in Canada should be offering things like Latin studies, Japanese, Art History. I am not saying none at all, but it should be cut back.
I remember when I was in undergrad chemistry 20 years ago, CSI was all the buzz, and schools starting offering forensic Science programs. I remember one of my profs laughing at that, saying we are going to have multiple schools graduate dozens of students trained in forensic sciences, when we have single digit positions for that at one main RCMP lab.
Nah, they just spend too much money on dumb things and then screw students over. Tuition has constantly surpassed inflation despite little justification. It’s not even a lack of government funding as even though costs would be up as the government has reduced the portion of tuition it covers, the total amount constantly increases just so students can get some crap TA failing to teach 30 students a tutorial section and profs who can’t teach their way out of a paper bag but make more money than you’ll ever dream of making despite getting their tuition paid for as grad students.
Ontario is so over educated we should cut the number of spots. Far too many roles require specific degrees just for something that really requires a high school diploma and some quick wit.

– 1st biggest is insane medical bills like in the US, which doesn’t apply here.

meh, post-secondary has become incredibly bloated, and now that the Millennials are done, it’s time to trim some excesses. The sheer amount of non-teaching staff is mind-blowing.
Have they tried less administration? Maybe downsize to account for the 80% less India-I mean international students
Education is an investment in the next generation and we haven’t kept up with that investment. For years, universities have faced tuition freezes, funding freezes, and increasing costs re labour.
For sure, universities need to be somewhat practical. Offering courses and programs where there are a handful of students being taught by $150k / year professors makes little sense.
At the same time, universities shouldn’t over focus on marketable skills. At their best, universities have helped young people learn how to think and to expand their curiosity and analytical abilities.
Outside of STEM, finance and accounting. Few people I know actually work in the field they studied. We really need to take pause and actually question what’s the value some programs actually mean. Don’t get me wrong, some programs are pretty interesting, but with all the free resources out there, I’d rather learn those for free instead of paying $50K for a piece of paper that won’t translate into a return on investment.
This is what happens when you cut government funding. Private market works for a time and then things collapse.
People understand that the main point of a university is to do research, funded in part by teaching students right?
Government used to fund universities at a high rate which kept tuition affordable. Then they kept lowering the rate so universities needed to find alternative income so regular Canadian students could still afford tuition. This is once again a failure of governments over decades. Just like affordable housing!
Admin makes bag and students pay for it. Now the admin will beg the government to keep the train going well blaming students.
Huh, I wonder if it’s like every other industry that’s stopped making money. Too much focus on what the owners want, no care for what the customers (students in this case want) want, and a complete refusal to acknowledge any problem even exists
My college is cancelling 16 programs including the one I’m enrolled in. No notice on whether we’ll receive any monetary compensation for the time and tuition wasted on a program they’ll no longer offer.
Let’s stop thinking of universities as „higher education“ and go back to thinking of them as primary drivers of innovation and the economy.

If you ask me, the university sold it sold to the devil when it built luxury condos, and sold them to foreign investors.
It’s truly a bizarre experience to walk around the campus and see Rolls-Royces depart the underground Parkades. If UBC is in a funding crisis, I’d be shocked because it should have made oodles of money with all the high-end real estate development it undertook. I think it wrecked the campus for students and student living.
Something must’ve happened that lead to the crisis. No, I’m not talking about infusion of money from international students that everyone knew was temporary but hiring new staff cannot be kept when the demand for teachers and administration is now under what was before 2020.
I will believe it when Conestogas will go belly up.
Why pay for a degree and attend class when you can just buy one?

Have you seen what these professors make? You can’t fire them and you can’t reduce their paycheck. Government should pass a law forcing all profs to take a pay cut. That’s the biggest expense that’s causing all these issues. Insider info.

Even conservatives talk about how he needs to increase funding to universities and allow universities to increase tuition.
Their cash cow was foreign students and they mostly got taken away. Not commenting on the rightness or wrongness of that but you can’t change their revenue model that significantly and expect operations not to change…
