When the people ensuring stability in a democracy can have their entire lives blown up with the kind of money a rich person doesn’t notice that’s clearly an issue.
I figured that out in careers class when I was twelve and found out how much our politicians and judges are paid.
Criminals/the wealthy have such vast quantities of money i find it laughable that anyone can pretend we have confidence in our system to not be corrupted.

Without rich people, who will pay for a generous welfare state?

It’s actually large amounts of undereducated aggressive poor people willing to vote for populist politicians, both far left and far right

They’re not even all that rich, comparatively. Musk’s entire fortune couldn’t even cover one third of the US economic costs for a single year (1 trillion).
If you want to know *truly* potentially nation-buying disparity, look to the Romans. Comparatively, Crassus was rich enough to be a multi *trillionaire*.

democracy should not allow for open bribery. Also referred to as lobbying. Political campaigns should also be limited to a certain amount of funding.

We need to be punishing folks like Elon Musk. Those that are enemies to the Middle Class need to be treated as such.

No shit, unfortunately a publication is not going to wake the population up to make the change we need though. Even the Dems are against changing the status quo. The governor of California is even against taxing the rich to proportionate effect.
Even here in Canada, many politicians are in the pockets of the rich. We can’t even agree to try and level the playing field here.
I’m not an idiot who doesn’t understand how the economy works, it is possible to bridge the inequality gap.
It just takes the right decision makers.

It’s almost like the communists were right about literally everything and oligarchs have spent 150 years and trillions of dollars and billions of lives towards making sure the proletariat does NOT figure that out lest we go all bugs life on their asses.

We need socialist rules to frame the capitalist system in a way that makes it harder to exploit.
Hardly restrict the amount of things that are of public interest that can be owned by one person.
One person should not be able to own tons of land, houses or stocks in multiple companys that gives him control over thousands of workplaces.
put an upper limit of private equity a person or private collab can own.

Anyone having more inherent power than someone else is a threat to democracy, I’m not sure how this is news to anyone?

For all the faults the EU has, I look to it as our best attempt at democracy. North America is a shadow of its former self in terms of democracy, and billionaire individuals and corporations are directly to blame.

So far I’ve seen four key problems with hyper wealth (really billionaire status).
1. It’s subverts the legal system by allowing abusive litigation and appeal without real remedy to the affected (see Trump and his civil cases).
2. It allows an outsized impact on politics where donations can influence public policy.
3. It can be parlayed into power in other areas such as transitioning from car money to owning social media sites and telecommunications infrastructure ( see musk).
4. It permits people to engage in broad social projects untethered to democratic consensus. If musk wants to buy a city, he can.
I’m perhaps conflicted on 4 as Bill Gates engaged in broadly prosocial projects, but just because a power was used well once doesn’t mean it should be a power we give to individuals. I think the reward for hard work and creativity should be luxury. But we should be very careful that we do not allow the reward to be Power. And right now it’s very much about power.
