Recently a millionaire bought out an entire up market housing development that has been slowly building over the last 10 years in the small town where my mom lives, shocking the entire town. He now has big plans to develop the land with businesses and he should make some good money, but it will affect the houses people built there as their retirement investments. This was a very stable development, the owners of the entire estate also lived there. Only a few people have been buying in and then building houses every year since it’s not the most busy town. One day the owner of the estate walked past one of the newer owners without their dog on a lease, he is an old man walking his old Labrador without a leash in his own estate in the country bothering no one, but this newer owner screamed at him to put the dog on a leash. Over the next few months this relationship devolved and turned sour and it became an entire fight between everyone in the complex. The owner decided he had enough and put the whole estate on the market leading the millionaire to be able to buy and totally start the new development plan.

What’s the moral of the story? There was no way any model could have predicted that him walking his dog on a leash that morning would completely upend the entire economy of the estate. Good luck doing this with the world.
