My wife is dual us/canadian and it’s a giant PITA tax time. She also has an avenue to get UK citizenship because her dad was born there.
I’m Canada only, we are interested in exploring her citizenship options when it comes time to retire but that is many years from now.
I think it’s a good thing to have dual citizens, borders are essentially just made up lines on a map. People are people, there are dirtbag Candians and dirtbags from other countries.
I’ve held dual citizenship for the last 40 years. This questioning loyalty is B.S.

I’ve had dual citizenship most of my life, there is nothing wrong with that and it’s ok to have several options in life.
I don’t give a damn about/think it effects loyalty but I have concerns related to public services. I.e there are typically three month residency requirements for public healthcare to become active; I’d like those lengths extended for dual citizens to make sure they’re not living and contributing in some other country, and just coming back here if they develop a chronic health issue for treatment etc. among other benefits
Why the heck are we talking about this just because the Americans…o of course it’s the American owned National Post. Ok fair enough but if we want any question of dual nationality why not make it an issue with the MPs we elect?
Look to Covid. China had its expats repatriating medical supplies.
Questioning the loyalty of dual citizens is a slippery slope that we do NOT want to go down.
Obviously exceptions can be made when a person is running for Prime Minister.

Ummm. Single citizenship holders can be just as disloyal. This is a dumb topic.
Loyalty is not really an issue if you don’t work for the government or have access to classified information, etc. Even if you do, it depends on the country. A short-term former prime minister, John Turner, was a dual citizen (UK/Canada).
Lots of people have dual citizenship and it never becomes a problem. I am a de facto dual citizen (the other country being China, which makes that illegal, but I am more of a „pretend Chinese citizen of convenience“ than anything). I don’t even have a passport from that country, just a resident ID card that is „for Chinese citizens living in China only“.
As a US citizen anticipating a Can cit via the new C3 legislation I am pacing the floor waiting to move to Canada to join the CAF.
Canada attracts people from all over the world and has no own culture (as stated by the government), so how can you be loyal to it? People stay here while it benefits them; and if it doesn’t, they move home.
If I could get a second citizenship, I would. But so far as my research says every country that is in my background is closed off.
It seems odd to question the loyalty of dual citizens. I chose to come and live in Canada, I chose to become a PR and then go to the extra effort of becoming a Canadian citizen. My life is here, I work here and pay taxes here and I don’t plan to leave, but I also I don’t see that I need to give up my UK citizenship to prove how much I love Canada.
I am of the opinion that if you are a leader, you should only have one single citizenship. Leaders need to focus on leading the country they are part of. We have already had situations where leaders having dual citizenship have used Canadian resources to benefit their other nation while leaving Canadians in bad situations.
At the same time, you can have a single citizenship and still run a business in a way that benefits another nation more than your own, or more likely, benefiting yourself while destroying the needy within your country (I’m looking at you, Land Lords and property investment speculators)

I have no problem with Canadians having duel citizenship.
The only people who should not have dual citizenship are civil servants (bureaucrats as well as judges) and elected officials of all levels.
Any other Canadian can have 190 citizenships as far as I care.
I was born in the US, but I have no family there and have been here since I was 2. My mother is a Canadian citizen by birth and my father was a naturalized citizen who came from Belgium.
At this point, the only thing keeping me from renouncing my American citizenship is that it’s an expensive pain in the ass to do so.
All that to say that in my mind, I’m just Canadian. I’ve been here over 50 years. I don’t even remember being a toddler or a baby in the US.
Edit: my father was a Belgian citizen too. At one point when I was a teen, I had received papers to do my military service, which implies that they thought of me as one. I never did the service, so maybe they no longer do. I called the consulate, was told they would call me back after investigating. It’s been over 10 years since that call, so I’m not holding my breath.
While I have no issue with dual citizenship. I do take issue with dual citizens living outside of the country their entire lives, contributing exactly ZERO to the Canadian economy and tax base and then being entitled to social programs when they are here. For that reason, I’d rather see us do away with dual citizenship. Pick your poison and pay your taxes.
