> Rogan described being “canceled” as “this idea that one thing you said or one thing you did, and now we’re going to exaggerate that to the fullest extent and cast you out of civilization for life” (via The Daily Beast).
> “In perpetuity,” Damon replied about the forever nature of cancel culture. “Because I bet some of those people would have preferred to go to jail for 18 months or whatever, and then come out and say, ‘I paid my debt. Like, we’re done. Like, can we be done?’ The thing about that getting kind of excoriated, publicly like that, it just never ends. And it’s the first thing that… you know, it just will follow you to the grave.”
And yet mel Gibson lives, breathes and works.
Name one person who has been cancelled who didn’t either (1) commit an actual crime (2) be irrelevant anyway.
Cancelled is a word certain people confuse with consequence which is what they are really facing for what they have done.
Do you like apples?
We’re throwing people in prison for quoting the president on the internet, and these fucking people still think „i don’t want to watch your stupid fucking movie anymore because you’re an asshole“ is a problem.
Getting canceled followed Louis C.K. all the way to a Grammy win. Spare me.
Okay, then throw them in jail lol
‚Canceled‘ isn’t really a thing though.
You can pretty much do/say whatever you want, and as long as you ignore the internet rabble, you can continue as you were…
Didn’t snoop Dogg say some stupid shit a few months back and had *the internet* in a frenzy, he was effectively „cancelled“ then..
But I see last week he was presenting Amy Poehler with an award for best podcast at a „prestigious“ event, so he wasn’t really cancelled…
Jared Leto pretty much *exists* as „cancelled“ yet continuously clutching Disney fat paychecks.
You’re only cancelled if you believe you’re cancelled and think that *the internet* is reality. You can be the most hated individual *on the internet*, but still happily unaffected with a stable career *in reality*.
Manson is going on a pretty sizeable tour. Chris brown still makes bank, sure he only tours to pay for legal fees at this point but somebody is always there to bankroll shitty people. Cancelled doesn’t mean anything in the real world. Just online. Where nothing really matters.
He’s right in some respects. Brock Turner is only famous because he wasn’t punished appropriately. But he is so infamous now, I’m sure he wished he was sentenced his four years or whatever, instead of his (hopefully) lifetime of social disgrace.
Meanwhile poor people who go to jail for 18 months can never get a decent job again. But honestly I do feel bad for the rich people that will have to go back to being normal. I’m over here crying tiny tears just for them.
I think the most wild example was Morgan Freeman. There was a pregnant CNN reporter asking a question and Michael Caine asked if she was indeed pregnant. She said yes, and he thanked her for the clarification citing an incident in his past where he assumed someone was pregnant and they weren’t (thus making an ass out of himself) and Morgan Freeman quipped, „I wish I had seen that.“
The reporter took that phrase and twisted it, insinuating Freeman was saying he wish he had seen said reporter getting pregnant i.e. having sex. She then went on to start asking all the women in his life if he had been sexually abusive to them in anyway.
Now, he’s on Lioness lol.
only like 5 people got legit canceled
lol he’s probably right
The thing that makes me crazy is that I was thought to speak with my dollars when someone does something I don’t like. The second we start doing that, everyone lost their minds! I’m sure Damon is talking about Casey Affleck’s experience being called out for being an a-hole.
Western civilization has begun to collapse. Who cares?
He’s promoting a movie that costars a man who had two assault allegations so spare me.
I don’t know man, the consequences seem pretty minor in most cases. The majority of these dudes are rich and working again.
Who got cancelled? Is there a list?
An actor is afraid of getting cancelled, shocking
I don’t think you can broad stroke this. He talks about using the word f*g when he was a kid and yeah, there were words that were used two generations ago that you can’t say today, and cancelling someone for admitting to that is just ridiculous. But sexual harassment or racism or bigotry against the LGBTQ community or in the case of Mel Gibson, overt anti-semitism are things that should get someone at least temporarily canceled. I also think you choose a public life when you become that rich and famous so thems the breaks.
What’s with all the actors on Rogan lately?
I’m so tired of hearing these multi millionaires constantly complain about what usually amounts to backlash on the internet. Even those that actually get cancelled (fired or blacklisted) just have to wait a couple years until it blows over and they’re welcomed right back in (maybe with some side eyes). I mean the fucking president has dozens of allegations against his name for Christ’s sake
Im totally fine with not seeing rich people on my screens anymore😅🤣 There’s a million others waiting to take their place.
It’s a job. If i said and did wild shit, and it found its way back to my employer, best believe I’d be getting fired 😅 Why are there special exceptions for celebrities ?
that’s only because going to jail isn’t so bad when you get sent to cushy low security rich person prison and still have 50 million in the bank when you get out. 99% of the population comes out the other side with no way to get back on their feet
Well in some cases you get both. Ask Harvey Weinstein (although his will be prison forever).
I listened to Matt Damon and lost all of my god-damned money.
For most employers outside of Hollywood a felony conviction and an 18 month prison sentence also follows you to the grave.
Some celebrities got „cancelled“ for things that would put regular people in jail for well over 18 months.
I kind of hate that term, “cancelled”. For the most part it’s just accountability that rich and powerful people aren’t used to. So they make up a term for getting caught and held accountable for their own actions.sure, sometimes I believe in second chances if the person is truly sorry but that depends on what they did.
Being „Cancelled“ is completely meaningless now.
A
I think his daughters need to tell him to shut up again
Does he not think the effects of 18 months of prison would follow someone to the grave?
I can’t think of a single person who has actually been cancelled.
I can think of a few people who’s careers were already shit, but I can’t think of anyone who had a great career, said/did something dumb, and then lost their career for it.
All these celebrities whining about cancel culture just screams entitlement. For most of their adult life they felt entitled to treat anybody however they want. When they get called out for their behavior it shatters their ego and start victimizing themselves. If I sexually assaulted somebody, I would be charged, serve prison time, and be out of luck for any job for having a record. When louis c.k assaults someone, he just waits it out for a few years with his stacks of cash, and then after it all blows over lands a Netflix stand up special
Not for long. It’s hard to believe, with the absence of object permeability which most humans learn as a toddler but our 48 year old system can’t sort out, but those people have been there this entire time.
Being “cancelled” might not affect everyone but for some they certainly take a hit so it’s as “real” as it gets for a selected few eg. Armie Hammer, Kanye West.
Who are all these „cancelled“ people, are they in the room with us right now?
All cancelled ever meant was to get yelled at on Twitter for a week until Twitter finds a new person to yell at.
[Matt Damon](https://youtu.be/gnPWJOJYVKc?si=LhCYB-lAH2CVFgad)
Alright does getting cancelled suck? Yeah it probably does. But why are people blind to the fact that it’s just the cost of being famous now? Everyone is watching you… are you that dense to not recognize that? You can whine all day about how it’s not fair but it’s the way it is. If you don’t like it then don’t be famous.
Wow, a bad take on the JRE?
