I believe there was some American war plans that said that if China attacked, Taiwan could prevent a naval landing on their main island or else repel it, and certainly long enough for intervention from the US, but they’d lose outlying islands.
They should just make it an open border and make a bridge…then everyone wins.

Technically, the Kinmen islands are, so the actually administered territory of the ROC (the state) is. Not Taiwan itself, the main island.
I was in Xiamen a few weeks ago and this is one of the islands from a beach in Xiamen.
