The most ridiculous statement recently made by Trump is that NATO should ensure that Greenland becomes American. It seems that this president does not realize that he himself is the leader of NATO and that, if he gets his way, this will mean the end of the alliance.

Whatever Trump’s motives may be, European NATO members must put a stop to his imperialism. Such a NATO leader is useless, so the now former European allies must threaten to kick America out of NATO. I constantly hear the mantra that “we cannot do without America.” Nonsense. It is a matter of will.

American troops can easily be replaced by European ones. French and British nuclear weapons can take over the Americans‘ nuclear role. With the help of the Ukrainian Delta system linked to European satellite systems, we can also carry out major military operations ourselves. We can now develop advanced long-range weapons together with Ukraine. The EU’s ReArm Europe program is gaining momentum. In a few years, the most important gaps in European defense will be closed.

If America is kicked out of NATO, the damage to its position of power in the world will be disastrous. Ramstein Air Base and the headquarters in Stuttgart, for example, are essential for American operations in Africa and the Middle East. Drones are controlled from Ramstein all over the world. Moreover, repatriating and relocating American troops—80,000 to 100,000 soldiers and their families—and dismantling bases would be prohibitively expensive, even for the Americans.

If Greenland is taken over and Trump goes further, for example by setting his sights on the militarily even more relevant Norwegian Spitsbergen, then we must hit America economically.

The ‘nuclear option’ that the EU can apply is the anti-coercion instrument with which America can be denied access to the European integrated market in whole or in part. Less damaging are targeted sanctions, high import duties on American products, entry bans for American politicians and industrial leaders, a sharp reduction in dollar transactions, ‘buy European’ legislation, tackling American tech companies through the Digital Services Act and the Digital Market Act, and rapidly becoming less dependent on American LNG. The list is endless.

Trump constantly claims that he ‘holds all the cards’. But in his overconfidence, he overlooks the power of Europe, or rather the EU. Provided that European countries become aware of their power and are willing to use it. Military steps are already being taken in response to the Russian threat. Economically, Europe can speak with one voice when it comes to trade policy. Because then it is Brussels‘ turn to act.

Jean Claude Juncker, hailing from tiny Luxembourg, managed to put Trump in his place in 2018 as President of the European Commission when Trump announced tariffs on European cars.

European leaders must start speaking Juncker’s language of power. No more “deals,” because for Trump that is a euphemism for capitulation. So no negotiations, but say no to American land grabbing and make it clear to Trump what price he will have to pay for his aggression. We are paying a high price for putting pressure on him, but if we give Trump his way, we will ultimately pay an even higher price.

    2. So, do exactly what the Russians want?

Definitely no ulterior motives with this…

Rob de Wijk, leading Dutch professor, making waves in the media this week alongside the former Dutch Chief of Defence Berlijn, who’s also calling to confiscate US bases in Europe. They’re spot on. 600 million Europeans! Twice the size of the US. Parliament 🇪🇺 already approved treaty reform. Go big or go home.

lol this article is advocating for something Russia has aimed for since the end of ww2 Europe would be screwed if the Americans were kicked out of nato and packed their bags

    5. Lol, this post is propaganda. This is what Putin wants. This was always the plan.

    6. real_grown_ass_man on

Trump has been damaging the strategic interests of his allies for quite a while now, with his pandering to putin, his threats of annexation and his cancelling of international treaties.
The US were the backbone of NATO, and i am sure many american service men served with honour. We should be grateful for their help and protection, but unfortunately, you cannot trust a military if you cannot trust its commander. The US shouls shape up or get out.

    7. The European leaders need to build its own millatary forces now to combat any invasion from America. Let trump drop out of NATO if that what they want. Because you can’t trust any help from trumps administration. While he’s still in the Whitehouse. He’s a dangerous dictator with his nodding enablers that won’t stand up to trump manic desires of building a empire.

    8. Important-Cry-4433 on

This makes no sense. This is what Trump wants. This is what Putin wants. NATO is a red line for many republicans even if they are no longer our ally’s. There would be zero strategy to doing this.

*Cant read Dutch. Just headline. Did not ready article as a result.

Some valid points below worth considering.

    9. Eh. If they do attack Greenland, or any other part of the EU or any NATO state, they’ve de facto removed themselves. Until then, need not make a certainty of something perhaps avoidable by a very lucky series of strokes, falls, and the passage of time.

    10. By virtue of their intelligence, carrier groups, air dominance and logistics, the US basically “is” NATO.

Kicking them out, while there isn’t a clear reason for doing, so is shortsighted and stupid.

    11. We need to kick Trump administration out of White House instead of USA from NATO.

    12. Why? They’re already about to do that themselves with the invasion into another country, so there’s no reason to preemptively kick them out and give them a reason to pretend like they’re a victim of something again.

    13. Jedibeeftrix on

Stupid person says Stupid thing. News at ten…

80% of nato funded assets are american, NATO doesn’t really exist without the US. There will be no ‚NATO‘ to have.

    14. Yeah, no! As hurtful this is to admit as European, we’re still super dependent on the US security wise. Decades of missed investments into security and intelligence, can’t be made up in a couple months. We have to cling as long as possible to wannebe hitler and hope he doesn’t escalates further too quickly.

Europe needs to rapidly improve their military and intelligence. I’d say we’re on a good way, but still have a long way to go. We lived in a bubble where nothing could hurt our relations with the US and have a rough awaking now. But cutting ties with the US right now is exactly what those bennons, millers, putins and so on want.

    15. Particular_Can_7860 on

Yes. That is trumps plan. He thinks NATO is not paying up the amount of money they promised. Plus NATO is highly inefficient as a force. Europe will get screwed because their defense budget right now is barely 1-2 percent. Just think taking 30 percent. Europe will not like cutting its social benefits. You will see what trump wants. He over pays to protect Europe. We pay for all the NATO bases, we lease the land. US pays about 60 percent of the budget for NATO. Newsweek reports the U.S. covered more than 68% of NATO’s total budget last year when including all forms of spending Newsweek. Will be nice to see Europe finally paying for its own defense

    16. The NATO was always a tool for the US foreign politics.

If we kick them out it’s done. They will destroy it before they let it happen.
And I am not keen for a nuclear war 2026.

    17. Hungry-Geologist911 on

But EU do not have any resources, like oil and gas for example, it can’t give the middle finger to everybody. It will kill itself doing that.

    18. Would help if people actually understand how NATO works and what an international treaty is.

You can’t kick anyone out of the treaty, because there is no mechanism for it inside the treaty.
Basically you need a new treaty which needs to be ratified by all members.

The other thing is, it’s already questionable how much NATO is undermined by the US (and Hungary and Slovakia etc), since NATO requires unanimity for any decision to be made, even article 5 contingencies. People think there is an automatism when it comes to article 5 and mutual defense. But an article 5 contingency needs to be announced in the North Atlantic Council and all members must agree, before NATO can do anything.

For that reason the military exercise planned by Denmark in the arctic is not a joint NATO exercise, but Denmark invited the countries individually, to make it a non-NATO operation, I think only Poland refused.

However, unfortunately the US is still the by far biggest component in NATO. 76% of all military intelligence is supplied by them (Norway and the UK supply 6% each, Germany only 1%). Also NATO aerial refueling and airlift capacity is absolutely dominated by the US. The US military is deeply integrated into the NATO command structure.
It would be easier to start a new mutual defence organisation that trying to kick the US out of NATO.

    19. aleopardstail on

the USA *is* NATO, they provide the bulk of the capability and funding, and could veto themselves being thrown out

set up something else instead, and then seriously invest in it

    20. Be careful what you wish for.

Three years of turmoil is nothing compared to generations of conflict

    21. Wonderful-Ad8206 on

I believe his arguments are as follows: the US will not defend the EU any longer (enemies might bet on this), hence having the US in Nato gives a false sense of security and makes the EU easy to blackmail/extort. He basically says it is rather a formality, Nato is already dead. It is rather extreme, let’s hope it is not necessary

    22. NeutralArt12 on

If foreign policy made decisions based off the emotional responses of redditors we all would’ve nuked each other 10 times over by now

    23. heatrealist on

you can’t throw anyone out of nato, but you can leave if you want. so go ahead and leave if you want to be out of the alliance with the USA.

    24. Note that any agreement that the USA has previously made , can only be regarded as “ notional “ with the present maladministration . Act before Donny has another “ thinking” minute.
Europe , together with Canada must stand united against the USA 🇺🇸 with its current leadership and aggressive style . Remember ICE in Greenland is frozen water , not vigilantes operating as government bounty hunters

*As of 2024, the U.S. had 31 permanent bases and 19 other military sites across Europe. That included at least 67,500 active-duty servicemen, according to the latest U.S. Department of Defense figures, with the lion’s share of those stationed in Germany, Italy and the U.K.*

*These include NATO’s largest base in Europe at Ramstein, Germany, and air force bases in the U.K. at Lakenheath and Mildenhall, which together host around 3,000 military personnel. The Aviano air base in Italy supports the only U.S. fighter wing south of the Alps, and is “a key NATO air power hub,” according to the Center for European Policy Analysis.*

*Ben Hodges, a former commander of U.S. troops in Europe, said those bases are “essential for readiness and enabling [America’s] global strategic reach.”*

*Forcing the Americans to abandon those sites would have a “disastrous” effect on U.S. operations, Hodges said, with Ramstein in particular acting as a key launchpad for American deployments in the Middle East and Africa.*

*Logistically, closing U.S. bases would involve “profound challenges,” said Geoffrey Corn, director of the Center for Military Law and Policy at Texas Tech University, like managing troop departures and legal claims for the value of military assets. But legally, “it’s really a matter of domestic law” for European countries that want to terminate the U.S. presence, he said. “That’s their prerogative.”*

The United States will live longer than Trump.
No need to rush, except for building our military might in the mean time

    27. slight_digression on

And this is the example we use when we say some people are divorced from reality.

    28. That’s how a kid would react, to be honest. What’s to be gained from expelling the USA from NATO?

    29. This is such a short-sighted, vengeful, and stupid take. Very good was to lose massive bargaining power and status over the long run in order to make a statement that will only last a year or so.

The fact this is being upvoted in this sub betrays a real lack of geopol and defense education here.

    30. A better option would be to abandon NATO and at the same time make.a new treaty. It’s not only the US that shouldn’t be there.

    31. Nah, because if the US are not in NATO, then we lose the only thing holding Trump back on invading whatever he wants: that he would be attacking an ally, which is something even most of the idiots in his party don’t want.

All of this takes weapons away from Ukraine. That’s the sad thing. This just looks like Putins playbook to me.
