Californian suburbanites are in for a very rude awakening when they realise that they don’t get special treatment and will be spending years in the grimness of the direct provision system.

I’ve changed my stance on letting in people from „shithole countries“ all of a sudden.

I know an American girl who has made an asylum claim. She genuinely believes she is justified in doing so. She is rich. She owns a house outright and doesn’t work. She completed a degree here and has made the claim as her post degree visa is running out. It is genuinely ridiculous.
There should be a blanket ban on Americans making claims and gumming up the system. Additionally, we do not need a fuck load of wealthy Americans fleeing here, raising housing prices further and competing for rapidly disappearing decent jobs. I feel terrible for what is happening in America but the timing is so fucking bad for us to help a bunch of upper middle class Americans ride out the next few years.

> Ninety-four US citizens sought asylum in Ireland in 2025, up from 22 the year before.

> Outside of the asylum system, some 9,600 US citizens moved to Ireland in the 12 months to April 2025, which is nearly double the 4,900 who immigrated here in the previous 12 months, according to data from the Central Statistics Office.
How is this news?

Come on now, it cannot be that hard for a US citizen to get some sort of Visa to live and work in Ireland. I would have thought the most difficult issue would be finding a house/apartment.

The irony of a people who are known around the world for emigrating everywhere trying to close doors on people who can financially support themselves and contribute to the country is beyond belief. It’s not a handful of yanks that are causing our housing crisis FFS

Can we make it a rule: if you voted for the jackass in control of your country, you dont get to leave it and you especially dont get to live in Ireland.

Up from 22 to 94 for the fourfold increase

Never heard that phrase before „fourfold“ always thought „tenfold“ just meant a lot not an actual measurement of number so can something me „twofold“?

The Irish government never grant asylum to Americans (source IPO). The reason for this is that it is seen as being a diplomatic issue otherwise. The threshold for claiming asylum is high so around 80% are refused. We need a policy change around this

People in the comments here seem to be talking about Yanks moving over here claiming citizenship though grandparents etc. but the headline is specifically about asylum claims which quadrupled last year. To 94 people. Up from 22 in 2024.
