I remember hearing this same sentiment last year and hearing that non-Americans would be boycotting American social media including reddit.

I mean yeah but your conservatives helped a lot and are working with our conservatives so watch out they are coming for you next.

It will be interesting to see how Europe celebrates America’s 250th anniversary this year, that will be the real diplomatic test.

I still remember when Putin arrived at the 2014 Normandy commemoration event a few months after invading Crimea, and receiving fawning applause from European leaders. I wonder if Trump will receive a similar moment that ages just as poorly.

[Edit] By „celebrates“, the US will almost certainly hold an event, and it would normally be diplomatically expected for European governments to either attend in person or else send an official communique.

I mean… US is about to invade an European territory. It will go fast downhill from there.

Having US carriers bombing Portugal, Spain and other Atlantic countries at 2030 is not that far fetched from a end of the world bingo card.

[EU chief diplomat Kallas: World’s woes mean it’s time to start drinking – POLITICO](https://www.politico.eu/article/eu-chief-diplomat-kaja-kallas-state-world-means-time-start-drinking/)

„*Kallas told leaders of the political groups in the European Parliament that while she is not much of a drinker now may be the time to start given* [*events around the globe*](https://www.politico.eu/article/denmark-allies-boost-greenland-military-presence-donald-trump-ramps-up-pressure/)*, according to two people who were in the room.*

*She was speaking around the same time as foreign ministers from Greenland and Denmark were meeting U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio over Donald Trump’s threats to seize the Arctic island.“*

Gonna take her advice, crack a beer and watch some soccer.

    5. Sorry European homies… This is not the way I want this to go down. Hopefully my government can get their fucking shit together.

    6. Does he mean that Germany is going to untie itself? Always been a US delegated command center into Europe.

    7. That’s an exaggeration. After the midterms, Trump will be put on a leash by legislators.

yeah, go back to the „shared values“ thing, that was funnier… when trying to explain why France and Germany can’t become one country, which would be a hell of a lot stronger move than complaining about not being able to trust Americans

From Greenland SOON, to bullying judges and allies, US is torching the post WWII order it helped build

Good. Burn the bridge before the fascists cross it.

What’s the lesson here for every country? Never elect a far right lunatic as a leader….

Are you going to cry about it or are you going to gather the european community and finally wake up.

Honestly this is germanys own good.

About time they noticed. And I genuinely hope this accelerates.

Yes, it’s gonna suck for a while (or even for a long time), but I really don’t think we can allow ourselves to remain as dependent on one country for so much.

A malignant narcissist in incapable of a two-sided relationship. Queen Elizabeth wrote that she was surprised that Trump seemed incapable of considering the possibility of mutual benefit. He only understands zero-sum: if someone else is doing well, it’s a threat to his fragile self-worth. He only feels that he’s winning when someone else is losing as a result.

What would have to happen for the EU to accept China and Russia if the US invades Europe (Greenland 🇬🇱?

    16. We have known that to be true since November 2024. European politicians have been high on hopium, refusing to face reality.

Bye bye US bases, bye bye lucrative military contracts, bye bye all good faith until the next administration and that’s not going to be great for a long time.

    18. aboysmokingintherain on

It sucks because in a lot of ways this is win-win for Trump. A) They get Nato to capitulate and get Greenland or B) Trump is able to get the US out of Nato which has always been his goal.

    19. Consistent_Ad3181 on

The European defence industry is in for a big boost, US… not so much.

    20. strabosassistant on

These ties were already over as soon as NATO commitments weren’t being met (and derivatively, that’s the real problem with Canada as well – not meeting NATO *and* NORAD requirements). The estimated cost to replace US security is 4-6% of EU GDP. That same amount of money is the difference between the generous social programs in Europe and the barebones make-do ones in the United States. The real question is how to de-tarball our relations *without war* because the friendship was already over.

    21. Maybe should’ve taken the hint when Obama started wiretapping your chancellor, conducting industrial sabotage, and tanking EU defense deals with other countries like Australia (Hi Joe!).

Odd time to wake up and smell the coffee.

    22. YouWereBrained on

Please, I am pleading with the EU to boycott the World Cup. There will be more World Cups to play in. Do not reward the US.

      Anyone…… anyone?????????

It’s really frustrating to have know this from the beginning.

For years and years and years I’ve been saying this.
But no, I’ve always just been “alarmist”… until now, when it is obvious to everyone, people are suddenly “so surprised”… And “who would’ve thought” it was a bad idea to rely on the US for defence…

    26. iMissTheDays on

Nothing we can do about that, Trump is a good psychopath, and the US democratic system doesn’t work.

Europe needs to own its shit, and irritants like Hungary need to be broken into submission. Either we do it, or Russia does it.
