  1. Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Japanese approval rating always either high (especially right after election) or down in the gutter (right before snap election)

When it comes to politics, Japan drinks a blended tea of matcha and poo. There’s no way of making sense of their politic decisions beyond an e-coli hallucination.

This is due to younger people participating in the political process at a much higher rate than before, and a larger impetus to their participation is the strong right turn against foreigners and immigration. The other factor is that because as a woman she stands out from the rest of the cookie cutter politicians, and again, the younger voters feel this may lead to different policies. Given her pretty conservative views, this remains to be seen.

Yen is dropping. China is about to rare earth sanction Japan. Trump is ignoring Japan.

OK, but what is it good for if the cost of living keeps rising, the yen keeps rising against the dollar / euro … it’s the same weird thing that’s happening elsewhere too, where people ostensibly vote to increase their quality of life but are paradoxically also open to make sacrifices based on purely „ideological“ and emotional reasons without any clear payoffs … until they become affected by the consequences of their own actions, at which point it’s too late
