Ah yes, the made up rankings counting whatever it is necessary for ranking maker universities to be on top lol.

Scandinavia always surprises me in these rankings.

Who calls themselves “Geo.Universe” and then only looks at Europe and two North American countries?
Like Australia has 25% of its universities ranked in the top 100 globally, with 2 Australian universities in the top 20 and 6 in the top 50.
And what about China (3 in the top 20) and Singapore (with no. 8 and no. 12)?

These rankings are nonsense, since the main factor influencing a university’s inclusion in the rankings is the importance of its research and the citation rate of its literature in the scientific community. But outside of English-speaking countries, universities are, in most cases, simply educational institutions. They are places where students study, and that’s it. In countries like France and Russia, scientific research is carried out by the Academy of Sciences and specialized research centers and laboratories.
Don’t be fooled.

It’s probably the Shanghai Ranking and they rank on impact factors. 60% is based on research, and some universities like the one I went to have great professors but their research is conducted in separate institutes not directly connected to the University. Although some are probably next door to the faculty. Idk if they factor that in. Anyway the number doesn’t matter that much. Some great scientists are bad professors, and some great professors are bad or mid scientists. Teaching is a whole other skill.
Remember, House was technically a professor and he was great at what he did as a doctor, unmatched even, but very very bad at teaching.

Comparing US and UK universities with German universities is futile. Most research in Germany doesn’t take place in universities but in research institutions like Max Planck Institutes (MPI), Fraunhofer Institutes, etc.

People don’t seem to understand what is the main purpose of a university. Education is important, sure, but the research being carried on there is the most important part. It also happens that best universities enter a cycle: they are the best universities -> best students/researchers want to go there -> they produce high quality research -> start again

These rankings are largely based on research output – in my experience, that has little or inverse correlation with undergraduate teaching quality.

These rankings are ridiculously skewed for American institutions. Yet in research, Europe, Canada and Asia punch above their weight.
