„This is the Gran Colombia, it was Bolívar’s idea and I propose by constituent vote of the population that we rebuild it as a confederation of autonomous Nations.
We would have common policies in the matters that the people propose. Undoubtedly the commercial policy toward industrialization and being what it is geographically a center of the world and of Latin America. A center of clean energies, of knowledge, of high-technology infrastructures for mobility and communication. On those there would be a Gran Colombian parliament, a court of justice and a government council, like in the European Union or in the federal USA.
A potential for tourism and for world connectivity.“

It is good that political leaders are beginning to bring these issues to the fore. The balkanization of Hispanic America was one of the greatest disasters that could have befallen the region.

I’m not sure I understand the context. A sitting president wants to add/update the nation states in S America?

I totally see Trump agreeing with this revival. Under US rule of course.

I love the idea of Gran Colombia but it’s probably not at all realistic, nor worth Petro bringing up.
And didn’t Simon Bolivar want Gran Colombia to include all former Spanish colonies in the Americas, a giant nation stretching from Tierra del Fuego to California?

I have never seen that strip of land from Costa Rica and Nicaragua added lol that must have come from the most schizo Colombian nationalists because of the San Andres dispute.
Also a bunch of Brazilian and Peruvian territory that nobody modern has ever claimed lol

On paper it seems like a great idea. But would the leaders of these countries give up their power and autonomy? They would be a superpower though if they could make it work. Interesting for sure.

This was obviously a result of the recent meeting between him and Trump just not sure if he’s trying to say a Gran Columbia would be harder for the US to push around and they’d be stronger together or this is some attempt to try and carve up Venezuela up under Columbian control with Trump’s favor.

Geopolitically this isn’t really a bad idea though my opinion is entirely from a foreigner’s perspective. I will say though, the casual inclusion of Panama is probably what would be the biggest point of contention here, which is probably not an accident.
Panama, due to the canal, is one of the most internationally valuable geographic points on the planet. As such, the US generally has been loath to give up control of it and while it is technically independent as of now, the US tends to bully them into favorable outcomes due to its strategic location militarily and economically. Trump is even pushing for the US to take it back over.
Because of that, I dont see the White House supporting this. Unless they can sway the orange man, this wouldn’t be „allowed“ to happen simply because it would finally put Panama under the roof of strategic defense coalition that could stand up to the outside world, namely the US, potentially China.
