The article asks why there are huge protests in Western countries about Gaza, but very few protests about Iran’s brutal crackdown on its own people.

The writer says Iran has oppressed, jailed, killed, and forced millions into exile for decades, yet this doesn’t spark the same outrage from activists, celebrities, or politicians.

He criticizes Western media, especially the BBC, for downplaying events in Iran while heavily covering Gaza, calling it hypocritical.

He also argues that politics plays a role: Protesting Israel is popular in some circles, while condemning Iran is less so.

Overall, the author claims Western activism and media attention are selective and inconsistent, showing far more passion against Israel than for Iranians suffering under their own regime.

    >*And who knows, to indulge my cynicism fully for a moment—perhaps the reason so many protesters condemn Israel for its legitimate actions and give Iran a pass for its illegitimate ones is that, unlike Israel, Iran isn’t run by Jews.*

It’s not white people killing brown people, so protesting against it doesn’t make you seem as edgy and woke. Same reason no one protests for Sudan either.

The protestors can’t virtue signal on this issue about the US or Israel, so they ignore it. Same as Sudan.

  4. This is a ridiculous question, because there is nothing to protest. People protest on both sides about Gaza and Israel because their governments are funding, directly funding, hostilities. They’re protesting to put pressure on their own government to support a cause. People in France aren’t marching for Renee Good because the French government have no involvement, but they will march for further support of Ukraine because it is something the French government has taken a position on.

Stop making protesters into the bad guys, you may not agree with their stance but what happened to freedom of speech? It’s basically just trying to lobby their own government.

The whole pro Pali movement is a hypocritical joke.

That’s not to say Israel doesn’t deserve criticism, or that there aren’t those who actually care about the cause, but the majority of people are just virtue signaling.l for cheap social media points.

  7. Why would we protest the Ayatollah potentially getting toppled? I and many others think that’d be wonderful. And believe you me protesting against the Iranian regime for all the messed up things they’ve done and are doing is going to do as much as blowing into a tornado to make it stop. It also isn’t comparable to the situation in Gaza whatsoever. This journalist is a hack trying to force a parallel between both situation to rile up some clicks. Embarrassing.

  8. Opinion, what would western protesters accomplish?

Iran is already economically and diplomatically separated from the west.

Nations like Israel actually do have benefits that could be taken away by western nations, Iran simply wouldn’t be affected by the same tactic.

  9. Maybe it is because Iran is funding and supporting the protests against Israel and the west.

  10. Israel is an ally of western nations and Iran isn’t – that’s why there are no protests. If one were to go onto the streets of London or Washington holding up a sign that says ‚Iran is bad‘ then that’s not even a protest is it? – because those that have power in Washington and London agree.

  11. someone drove through one in LA the other day. fortunately no one was hurt. Uhaul driver apparently didnt get what was going on or didnt approve, and just pushed on through.

also western nations are not obligated to protest in a way that might result in another foreign intervention nightmare, especially as autocratic movements are attempting to topple them internally already

  12. What exactly is it that we’re supposed to be protesting? Our governments are already hostile to Iran. We’re not trade partners with Iran, we don’t invest in Iran, we don’t give aid to Iran. We have already boycotted, divested, and sanctioned Iran. I’m not sure what it is I’m supposed to be protesting.

They are entirely uncomparable. Israel is committing crimes against humanity on an industrial scale, entire suburbs are being bombed, including houses, apartment blocks and everyone in it. And cutting off aid so the survivors face preventable starvation and deaths from the cold.

And they are supposedly allies and members of the developed world. That is why people are horrified and turn out in hundreds of thousands to protest.

  14. What a disingenuous question. If the government is already aligned with the people on the issue, there is nothing to protest. Protests have goals. In the case of Gaza, people wanted their government to condemn Israel’s actions, to stop morally and financially supporting them and to push for a ceasefire. What would be the point of a protest against Iran when western governments have already sanctioned Iran several times?

I guess the people that funded the previous social media campaigns don’t benefit from it. I have seen protests here in Texas but they were small. It’s telling that there is little outrage in the social media sphere, Reddit, Instagram, etc. Maybe Iran funded the previous social media campaigns for Gaza! That would explain why the campaigns are not running…
