    1. „Many will be left with no option but to pass this on to customers, which helps nobody.“

Just stop stocking it or stock a cheaper alternative.
      You’d swear the were helpless.

Instead of accepting every 50c increase and pass it on to customers who can’t afford to go out as much.

Try selling Beamish for €5, push Guinness up to €8 and give people the choice to vote with their wallets until Diageo climb down.

It might as well cost 20 euro. It is not an essential product, so if it isn’t worth the price, I just won’t buy it.

If the people don’t make the rational decision of voting with their wallets well, play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

    4. and they’ll wonder why younger ones wont be drinkers in 10 years time. they are killing nightlife with these ridiculous prices.

    5. GhostsOfTheRobotTree on

This will keep happening until people stop buying Diageo products… Plenty of alternatives out there.

Fuck Diageo, id be glad if the VFI actually just stopped stocking their shite at this stage.

Alcohol sales in Ireland have dropped something like 30% in the last 20 years. This raising prices constantly pushes more and more out so it’s a short term solution to what will become a long term problem for them as the younger generations move onto something else.

Time to turn the hot water cylinder into a Poitín still.

Rising heating cost plus this, may as-well

Diageo are doing the work countless anti alcohol NGOs could never achieve

    10. Diageo pumping the price of Guinness to make up for its loss making brands.

They are banking most people won’t care and shrug it off and they are right.

Thats it lads. Pubs are going to go the way of the dodo. Younger generation hardly go out, the older generation of alcoholics are dying off, the middle cant afford to go out more than once a week (if even that), even those with plenty of disposable cash wont want to go to empty pubs that are shit craic.

You’d wonder at what point do Diageo start to value volume drops over % increases in selling prices. And I’d also wonder do they even see volume drops offs when they increase their base prices.

Every Jan with the past 5 years the have issued a cost price increase now that coincides with the start of their financial year. The only way they will even contemplate not introducing it is if significant volume falls off over time.

Meanwhile you can buy a gram of marijuana for as little as €8 in the Netherlands and that’ll make 2-3 joints

As it happens I had a pint of Guinness in the same Dublin pub almost exactly a year apart in December. €6.90 in 2024 became €7.20 in 2025. In January 2025 Diageo announced a 6 cent increase to a pint, so that 6 cent turned into 30 cents by the time I got my pint.

In fifteen years time when the generation of older men who’d religiously go out for pints in a pub are gone, I wonder if these companies will blame themselves or society for the eventual decline of people socialising in pubs. Especially with this generation not being as pub focused as previous ones (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing).

I was never much of a pub person. However, I made a small bar at home and occasionally add to it every few weeks with some spirits and get the occasional bottle from friends and family. While I know this discussion is mainly for pints, I have found that making cocktails at home has been a significantly cheaper experience. Especially when you factor in deals in stores, heading up to the north etc. Plus making your own sugar syrups, super juice are very cheap and last for a good while.

There comes a point when you just can’t justify doing it anymore and while it sucks that such a prominent part of our culture is being ruined, eventually people need to realise it’s dying out because companies like Diageo are the ones killing it for both the pub owners and customers.

    16. What’s really maddening is that non alcoholic beer costs the same as alcoholic. Why is a pint of Guinness 0.0 the same as regular Guinness? Wasn’t there a tax on alcohol that would make a difference there?

    17. TurfMilkshake on

Diageo milking Guinness because its other brands are doing shite.

If it went up for sale, half of me wished the Irish government would buy it, the other half of me realises the pints would be €15 within a couple of years if that happened.

    18. Drink something else. Avoid the dirty hangovers and giving those Diageo c**nts your hard earned coin.

    19. flim_flam_jim_jam on

Pubs need to start installing more beamish and murphys taps. Many pubs don’t sell those stouts at all. Install the taps and customers will come

    20. This Dry January already has me considering cutting down on the pints. I’m glad Diageo is helping my decision.

    21. StrangerExistingFact on

Home sessions exclusively for a while now anyway wont affect me much

    22. If they can sell pints cheaper elsewhere, we’re clearly being fleeced.

We seriously need a law forcing companies to justify any price increase, and only then would they be allowed.

    23. Diageo stock is a a total downtrend for 3 YEARS…down 60% while the markets hit ATH.

They are trying to improve their earnings reports. Any other reason is bullshit. Board of directors have shareholders breathing down their necks.
