I’m mid 30s, fully expect retirement age to be 70 before I get to it. I’ve been aware of this for several years. It’s not nice, but it makes sense. Aging population and we’re living longer.

Yeah for sure the other 4 need to read the room and see where things are going, 70 if lucky

The other 4 will be working until they’re dead.

No idea how I’ll retire tbh… One of those I’ll cross that bridge when and if I get to it type things.
My mam didn’t make it to 70 which kinda changed my perspective on a lot of timelines tbh.

Aside from the „economic contributor“ aspect, which is gross, I really just think it’s nuts that many people go from a 40 hour week to a 0 hour week at age 65/66/67, with probably 20 years still to live.
I personally haven’t seen much on what sort of work might be reasonable and meaningful for older adults to do – whether its because they want to supplement their income part time, or whether it’s because they still want to feel involved in the world.
The current expectation seems to just be „status quo, but for a few years longer“.

People will retire to cheaper countries. My plan is to retire in Bulgaria

When the idea that everyone should be able to retire started, life expectancy was in the high 60s or low 70s, now it’s in the low 80s.
I’m never sure why people regard it as some massive conspiracy that retirement age needs to move upwards with life expectancy.
Most 70 year olds now are far healthier than 65 year olds decades ago.
Any one can retire whenever they want, but they’ll either be broke or they need to save to do so.

I’ve a colleague who’ll be 70 this time next year. Always takes extra hours if going, and this is a very busy retail environment. She’s fitter than the rest of us put together, and is reaping the rewards of her healthy lifestyle.

It is so frustrating because nobody tslks about the elephant in the room.
Are employers ok to recruit pass 50???
As usual a completely schizo situation.
They just hope that we die asap. It is cheaper to the society.

People should be incentivised to work until they’re 70 through tax and pension incentives. Just like Denmark are now doing.

I was talking to a Brazilian lad I work with and he was telling me in Brazil you only have to work for 30 years and you can retire on a state pension. So if you took a trade straight out of school or started working full time you could be retired by 47/48. Mad stuff.

If you own a home at retirement time you’ll be fine.
If you’re renting you’re probably fairly fucked.

My aunt is in this boat right now and it’s so hard to see. Turned 70 last year, husband died unexpectedly and quite suddenly 2 years ago. She’s working 8-4, Mon – Fri. She’s in bed by 6 every evening.
Has been off now since before Christmas and to be fair her employer is being fairly sound about it, has been in touch to ask how she is and reassure that he has no intention of letting her go but needs to come up with some long term plan as they’re paying her a wage, paying her cover and because she’s past retirement age they are getting nothing from state.
He’s offering her to move to part time each day or a few days a week if she is adamant on staying on but she needs the money full time, just decades of no planning / pension coming home to bite.

Any of the other 4 who are under 50 are deluded.
