Not gunna say I know the particularities of this photo ,but in general I see similar areas in Saharan Africa all over the place, from Mauritania, Sudan, Niger etc.

Often the surrounding area is so arid and dry that wild animals and domestic ones will inevitably find themselves around available water.

It will appear as a dark spot surrounded by animals, much like the photo provided. Although I’ll have to say this does look a bit different than your typical watering hole.

      # Current conflict

      * Since April 2023, Sudan has been in a civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), rooted in a power struggle among former allies in the post-Bashir transition.
      * Both sides face accusations of war crimes, including mass killings, sexual violence, and ethnic targeting, particularly in Darfur and areas like El Fasher and Geneina.

      # Humanitarian crisis

      * The war has produced the world’s largest displacement crisis, with estimates of around 13.6 million people uprooted and tens of millions in need of humanitarian assistance.
      * Health services, infrastructure, and basic supplies such as food, water, and medicine have been severely disrupted, leaving many regions hard to access for aid agencies.

      # Recent developments

      * The army-aligned government has announced a move back to Khartoum from its wartime base after RSF forces previously overran the capital early in the war.
      * International actors are sending aid (including shipments from Türkiye) and debating arms sales, while diplomatic efforts have so far failed to secure a lasting ceasefire.

I mean… A lot is going on in Sudan. A whole lot.
