    1. I tried watching this show in season one, and I could not get to the second episode. In the past I have struggled to explain why I can’t watch it to people who keep recommending it. When I learned that S2 takes place over a holiday weekend, I had my answer.

I broke a leg in a backyard accident on Thanksgiving weekend when I was a child. My parents, who at the time were very poor, tried to get me into the ER at the local hospital, but it would not take our insurance. They had to drive me 30 miles away, leaving most of my siblings at home with a neighbor, to get help for me.

The hospital I landed in was packed with accident victims, and the only space for me was on a gurney in the hallway outside the ER. The wait for care was so long that my broken bones had started to knit by the time I finally got treated, in the middle of that night. In those hours, I saw shit I have never been able to forget.

American healthcare has been broken for my entire life. I understand that this show is a wake-up call for anyone who doesn’t know that, but watching it is an intolerable reminder of the worst 48 hours of my life.

S1 didn’t take place on a holiday and I’m looking forward to the chaos of July 4th in an emergency room. S3 can do whatever it pleases, I’ll watch.
