      Man, the irony of Trump having the entire bible thumping section of the voter base, while the Pope himself comes out and says trumps bad (in less straightforward words) just goes to show the hypocrisy of Christianity. They preach it and an extremely large portion don’t follow it but instead cherry pick the parts they like and that’s about it. MAGA would deport Jesus if he showed up at the door to tell them how wrong they are. As a matter of fact, I think there is a video of an extremely ignorant maga woman saying just that, if Jesus didn’t come legally then she’d be for him being deported. Unreal

      They can repent and be welcomed back but until then they can feel the cold of the absence of jesus’ presence as they are barred from mass and sacraments

      This is why the CIA was promoting evangelical churches in Latin America. The reason there are so many Pentecostal churches in Latin America is because Catholicism is viewed as a communist religion, no joke. There’s a reason why evangelical „missions“ abroad are more about proselytizing than actually helping people. Pentecostalism is one of the most effective denominations to advance this mission because it is a highly vitriolic, fire-and-brimstone, socially conservative, isolating, and emotional church. I was raised around it. My grandmother went from not attending church, to born-again, to becoming a pastor in less than five years. Countries with rampant wealth inequality, violence, crumbling safety nets and institutions, and political corruption are breeding grounds for a popular uprising once people get pushed too far.

      What better way to quell this than to attract just enough people into a philosophy where they will willingly put themselves under the thumb of repression for fear of eternal damnation? It’s easy to fracture class solidarity when just enough people are convinced that the reason things are fucked up is because society „abandoned“ God. It’s easy for people to go against their best interests when you convince them that activists are satanic. Evangelical churches routinely present feminists, „hippies“, leftists, LGBT, the socially excluded, and academics as a threat to family values and morality rather than victims of circumstance or forces for positive change. Religious leaders are in positions of power even without being in public office, so it’s pertinent for the CIA to introduce religions that preach against the people or ideas that could threaten American capital interests. Pentecostals are in no way the majority, but see a Pentecostal service in Latin America for yourself and you’ll understand how these often tiny churches can occupy a very important space within a struggling community.

      According to my devout Catholic family members, the infallible, voice-of-god Pope is wrong because Trump = Good. I’m an honest to God Gymnastics judge and I can’t make that logical leap work.
