Its very simple. Like most places where there is overtourism, it is big business conglomerates/capital/landlords that profit the most while normal citizens are stuck paying for infrastructure used to enable this tourism. Tourism jobs are almost always notoriously shit hospitality jobs so its not like it creates a lot of high quality jobs.

This unequal distribution of the economic benefit of tourism causes resentment.

I’d say it is the same mechanism that it is anywhere. People are becoming poorer, and the simplest reaction is to punch down, because there’s less political blowback from voters. People are more likely to protect their perceived „own“ and it’s easier to just blame someone else.

It’s the same here as in countries like the US, Germany, Australia, and a whole bunch of others. And it’s sad that there doesn’t seem to be much leadership in the world that’s able to inspire hope and real-world change.

Tourists are annoying and make everything more expensive
Foreign workers are difficult to work with and give leverage to businesses, especially in terms of salary.

    4. Some people say that the worst thing that can happen to you is when you become poor after being rich.

Whenever many Japanese see Gaijan tourists, they feel resentful looking back on the good old days when they were the tourists.

If you live outside Japan, you’ll know that Japan tourism is heavily marketed everywhere. People are visiting because the Japanese Government asked them to, not to spite the wider population.
