I thought Tokyo already required to purchase a garbage bag but seems like they haven’t. Many cities and towns already require designated garbage bag purchase.

It’s not tax but it’s going to be additional required expense. I think the total expense is getting higher than the cuts. This makes sense because the government is spending more money.

    2. How about ‚encouraging‘ supermarkets and product makers to cut down on the absurd overpackaging of everyday items first?

Vacant lots will get more garbage than usual. They gonna blame foreigners.

Household waste reduction is necessary … so essentially she just wants people to buy less stuff? Because absolutely everything is wrapped in at least two layers of packaging here. Cart before the horse

It’s always amusing to see that instead of solving a problem, whoever is in charge just implements a fee or tax. Most issues could be solved with a simple solution but instead we get a new tax.
But now we blame foreigners for the tax.

Japan as many other countries won’t change, just go around with the same problems

    6. It is amazing how Japan being a G7 country, can’t manage household waste. This is one of the biggest stresses in Japanese society. Cameras outside garbage collection points, and just yesterday I was up in the mountains driving, and there were cameras there too, to stop illegal dumping. So much stress around garbage disposal, why can’t Japan manage this? I’ve lived in North America, Europe, and even Africa, and in all of these places there were never any garbage disposal problems. So why, Japan? Why?

Perfect when a small snack weighing 2 grams has 2 pounds worth of plastic on it.

    8. The “environmentally friendly” reason is just an excuse to deal with rising costs and pass on the costs to the public.

No need to get enraged over the eco friendly reasons.

Things are not good… cost of living is going to keep exploding.
