Is that literally just saying „this is the snowiest January 8th in a while“? Isn’t that just down to the timing of storms, and some years it will be mostly in December or February instead?
The % with any amount of snow seems like a weird figure, too. It’s mostly measuring whether France, Germany, Poland, Croatia etc got any snow at all. The snow there is less than 10cm on this chart, so does it mean anything really?
I’m no snowologist but outside those places, don’t 2024 and 2022 look more widespread and 2025 looks deeper, and 2023 looks about the same? 2018 looks like a bit of both?
So the headline „France and Germany are getting their once-a-decade snowy winter“ seems a bit boring.
I live in the Austrian Alps 600m above sea level, it has snowed twice. Christmas was 2cm of snow, lasted 2 days on the ground. And then, this past weekend, again a mere 2cm. Its kind of pathetic really.
And yet here as usual we don’t get anything….
On the other hand, the entire southern half of Finland was completely snow-free until just a couple of weeks ago, a very, very rare situation for late December§.
Recent for me is anything after 1995… and recent on geological timescales even longer. Looking back only a bit over a decade isn’t really informative.
Nice and lucky I’m in South West Scotland near Glasgow and we have had no snow at all.

Pretty much. I’ve not seen snowfall this significant in my city since 2010. I’m enjoying every second of it, while drivers who have never encountered snow are in full panic mode.
Besides the snow, it’s also very cold. Like, as cold as it used to be – this is very good (I’m Swiss) in our case. Many mosquitoes and all kinds of exotic insects/animals that do not belong in this eco-system felt very comfortable during this mild winters and spread quickly, challenging the existence of domestic wildlife. I hope the cold got rid of most of them.

The problem is at least here in Bulgaria, the days prior to that snow, we had unnaturally warn days. There were even some temperature records, in one city it it was 20C.
Honestly, I can’t really remember when we had more than 20 cm of snow here in north Croatia. Heck, can’t remember what was the last time we had snow that didn’t melt the next day!
Since Saturday it’s freezing here, today we had -16°C, everything is frosty, snowy.
I’m enjoying it so much!
Been to Tirol in the past 1 month. The snow is sadly pathetically shallow. 😅

It was literally 12 degrees this morning, with thunder storms, and 4 hours later everything was white. Literally felt like that 2012 movie. Sudden freezing… Balkan country btw.

I have a problem with this kind of sample analysis
It simply states nothing other than the fact; one cannot make any assumptions or conclusions from it.
This comparisons are as useless as the bar charts they put in christmas day telling you „this was the coldest/hottest christmas day in x years“ Shouldn’t you pick the worst/best day in a period? e.g. first month of winter, winter, … For example, if you just go two days after you will catch Filomena in 2021 which left knee deep snow in Madrid, the airport stopped for a week and people were skiing in the city center.
In most of continental Europe only snows a few days per year and not every year so of course if you pick this years worst day doesn’t necesarily line up with other years worst day.
I think what’s still scary is the mountain snowpack. Sure, most of Europe is covered, but 2026 is one of the only years without widespread 150cm+ throughout the Alps region

For sure unusual snow cover, but I don’t see 80% there, also this uses Mercator projection so Scandinavia and Northern Russia appear way bigger than they actually are. Sweden is actually smaller than Spain.
Most of last night and most of today was snowing – quite gently, but it’s been below 0C all the time and we’ve had heavier snowfall earlier.
I do kinda hope it stays for longer, and we get more of it. God, we could use more water in the soil for the spring and summer :/

Compare max in a year, not a specific date.
There’s still relatively small amount of snow in Finland (excluding Lappland). For example the tracks for cross-country skiing are minimal at the moment. This is somewhat unheard of as we are approaching mid-January but it’s the new normal. Sucks for skiiers.
And yes, having only 5 cm of snow that barely covers the grass isn’t much.
La Niña winter, which tends to favor heavier snowfall in northern and northeastern Europe. Effects in the Alps are more variable.
Please look out for homeless dogs and cats during this freezing weather. If you see an animal in need, please report it to the local authorities or animal rescue organizations. 🐱💖🐶
For those asking how there can be so much snow while global warming is increasing at unseen speeds…we wouldn’t have most of that snow if it wasn’t for global warming, warming up the oceans and seas, causing more water to evaporate, form the clouds and turn the rain that is going down on western europe into snow after it meets cold polar air drifting down from the north. Without global warming it would be colder and less humid = less snow.
I’m an 07 finn and live around Oulu. I had my first black christmas this year. It’s been cold as shit for a while now but there’s still not a lot of snow, just enough to be winter.
So global warming WAS a lie.

I love how you can see in the ’18, ’22 and ’25 maps that the only place in Slovakia that had snow were the High Tatras (and the region around them, Poprad)
