    1. I’m proud of my home state Missouri. Our citizen initiative process is a form of direct democracy which allows issues to be placed on the ballot by gaining enough voter signatures. That is how we got minimum wage increases and enshrined reproductive rights into our constitution despite most of our politicians.

Oregon uses a staggered system where it varies from county to county.

Rural counties would be $1 less and Multnomah, parts of Clackamas, and parts of Washington counties (Portland) would be $1.25 more.

“Average population” counties like Lane or Deschutes are $15.05

    3. Washington State does one even better by making min wage in Seattle $21.30.

I hate the color gradient here so very much. I don’t know why it feels wrong to have orange be higher and blue be lower, but it feels WRONG

Florida’s minimum wage is scheduled to increase to $15.00 per hour on September 30, 2026, following annual $1.00 increases from $13.00 in 2023, reaching $14.00 on September 30, 2025, and finally hitting $15.00 in late 2026, as mandated by a ballot initiative approved by voters.

In New York, it’s $16, except for downstate where it’s now $17.

Upstate NY is probably one of the few remaining areas of the country where you can survive off minimum wage.

Minimum wage is also now pegged at the rate of inflation, so it will continue to go up incrementally.

The GameStop near me pays $8 an hour (PA)

It’s honestly insulting even trying to hire people for that amount

    8. smoke_sum_wade on

nobody in Pennsylvania is only paying that though, everything here is above 10

    9. It’s 7.25 here in ND but no one is hiring for less than 12

Walmart doesn’t hire anyone here for less than 15, there’s jobs everywhere, everyone’s hiring

    10. Pennsylvania and North Carolina have very low minimum wage compared how much it cost to live .

Is it common for people in lower min wage states living near state borders, eg Washington and idaho, to travel to another state to work together get higher pay?

I wish people talking about minimum wage would look at alternate systems instead, like a modified version of what Alabama does. Alabama doesn’t have a minimum wage. Instead it gives tax credits for each new hire who gets paid above a certain amount. If tuned, that would be a much better option, since it also prevents paying under the table. It also would allow for a more graduated system with more benefits for higher wages.

$7.25 is insane to think about
… Especially since I made more than at a cash register as a teen in high school… Over two decades ago.

    14. I’d be curious to see what the like, in practice minimum wage is across all the states that are officially at 7.25

Like I know in PA it’s 7.25, but in reality pretty much every major chain I see is offering starting positions at $15, Wawa, Walmart, McDonald’s, 7/11, etc.

No idea how hard that’d even be to estimate.

New Hampshire’s is strangely low. Them being in that area of the country I just assumed that they’d have set their own minimum.

    16. seanofkelley on

I made $7.25 an hour working at Dunkin Donuts 30 years ago. The fact that somebody doing that same job now would be making the same amount of money is fucking insane.

    17. Spare_Blacksmith_816 on

Fast food places in Iowa pay $12-$15 an hour. Not sure why anybody would accept minimum wage.

    18. polythene-psychonaut on

I live in one of the 7.25 states. I have to work two jobs that both pay 12/hr, and my bosses tell me I’m lucky to be getting that much.

    19. Calm-Maintenance-878 on

$7.25 is not enough but it’s good to see so many states more than double minimum wage.

    20. Min wage means nothing, how many people are working full time on min wage?

Ex: here in NH there is no state minimum wage wage so it goes off of the $7.25. McDonald’s routinely advertises *starting* at $15 min.

    21. True_Muffin_5938 on

Thank God I live in Washington where you’re paid at least something decent.

    22. Blunts_Bongs on

I notice almost the entirety of the South East US is 7.25. Why? I live in NC and I can confidently say that’s not livable even in the most rural of areas. I’m surprised even Georgia and Louisiana are still so low

    23. Dynablade_Savior on

Nebraska having $15 as their minimum is insane. Probably actually a living wage across a good portion of the state too
