Good article and good advice. Canada should proceed, but cautiously. We should expand trade and tech exchange, but also crack down on domestic manipulation by China. China should be one major trade partner, but so should most of the rest of the world.
Looking at the US political climate and saying its to authoritarian and hostile and then going to China instead is Canada’s pot calling the kettle black moment.
As usual, the number of people on the far left already commenting here with their heads in the sand about Communist China is incredible.

If the CSIS says to be cautious, then Canada should be cautious. Anyone who comments saying Canada doesn’t have to be cautious or brings up whataboutisms like, „What about the US or [insert country]?“ doesn’t have Canada’s best interests in mind.
It literally does not hurt to be cautious, and I roll my eyes at commenters who say otherwise. Cautious does not mean wanting less trade.
We need trade and we need to find a way to address our current disputed. The Soy and Seafood tariffs are crushing.
But we need to be careful not to be drawn into becoming the ping-pong ball between China and the US. We also cannot forget our fundamental values and China’s track record on human rights and their aggressions against Taiwan.
My advice … tread lightly
Honestly, we should be looking for new partners. The global power dynamic is shifting dramatically and in short order. We can’t trust our southern neighbours anymore… we don’t need to be besties, but we need to look after our interests.
A deal with China would certainly dismay our American politicians. Should be interesting
We need China. USA are allied to Putin, not Canada.
