The first and only time Article 5 was invoked was to support the US in Afghanistan after it was attacked by Al Qaeda on 9/11.
Some 1,000 non-US NATO soldiers lost their lives then. This doesn’t include the non-NATO allies of the US who also joined.

This is such a terrible thing to say. I deployed under a NATO command. The Italians did my route clearance in Afghanistan. I’ve served with the French in support of Syria. Technically, the Syria thing wasnt NATO but the same soldiers who serve in NATO serve with us elsewhere outside of NATO.
