this is a big shift, is it going to last?
tldr; Japan is planning a major cryptocurrency policy shift by introducing a flat 20% tax on digital asset gains, aligning crypto taxation with equities and investment trusts. Currently, crypto income faces progressive tax rates up to 55%, discouraging trading. The reform aims to boost trading activity and tax revenue while expanding institutional participation. Regulators are drafting new rules for token classifications, custody practices, and issuer disclosures, with implementation targeted for 2026. Enhanced investor protection and security measures are also part of the plan.

For the dummies – is that better or worse than before?
Any amount under 100% tax is far too low.
Great development – other Federal Regulations Even use a 0% tax – in Germany you pay nothing on crypto gains if you hold the assets for more than 1y
this is positive , that quite low
Ffs what the fuck is wrong with them.
This is for GAINS on holding/trades.
Japan already has great policy for receiving crypto as form of payment, and crypto debit cards work in most places.
What do you all think about the flat rate?
Personally I’ve never exceed low tier tax brackets. 20 feels pretty fair and likely is a good plan to keep the money in Japan, potentially discourages hiding assets.
