For those curious, Life of Pi won director that year. Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Lincoln, and Silver Linings Playbook were the nominees.

I think we can all agree on which one of these could have been swapped with Affleck for directing.

    2. Argo even getting nominated shows a massive bias in the film industry toward movies that glamorize Hollywood itself. The fact that it won best picture is an embarrassment for the Academy. I completely forgot Affleck even directed it. Aside from being just a totally forgettable movie on its own, it had zero interesting directorial choices.

All of these egomaniacs drive me crazy. They need to be constantly stroked. It’s not enough to be rich and famous. I read on here the other day that Eddie Murphy dipped out on the Oscars after he lost when he was nominated for Dreamgirls because he couldn’t handle being confronted with consolation well-wishes from his peers. These award shows suck.

    4. Not everyone can win, not everyone is nominated, not EVERYONE was snubbed. Award shows are not held to the highest standards as even watching all the movies prior to voting wasnt a requirement until recently

Is it? Argo was such an overrated movie. I remember laughing at how bad the dialogue was.

    6. Good story, good enjoyable movie (saw it in theater), straight/normal directing. Wasn’t deserving of any award, certainly not DESERVING of best director. Nothing very imaginative about the directing. It’s only a discussion point because it won’t beat movie but not best direction whereas they usually go hand in hand, but guessing not always.

Argo is a cheap, manipulative movie. He didn’t deserve it. And it shouldn’t have won best picture

    8. I feel for the guy. He felt like a fraud. If he had the year’s ‘best’ film, wasn’t he by default one of the year’s ‘best’ directors?

The problem that was hard to accept in real time was he didn’t make the year’s best film, not even close, but an entertaining and inoffensive movie that the academy decided to rally behind.

I think if he were more self deprecating about that fact his embarrassment would play better PR-wise.

    9. We’ll just make a headline out of anything huh? Read the fucking article people.

He’s saying it was embarrassing to have to go to other award shows where he *was* nominated in the midst of an awards season where he won a lot of awards and have to answer “so about that Oscar snub” over and over again.

Having a best director award separate from best picture was always confusing to me anyway. If you watch a movie and deem it a „best picture“, that seems to be the main evidence that the director brought all the individual pieces of the movie together in the best way, and hence best director award is redundant.

There are other aspects to being a great director such as fostering a good set environment, not being an asshole. But only those involved in the production would know those things and isn’t necessarily apparent from watching the movie.

I would think the Canadian snub IN *Argo* was a bigger embarrassment.

I saw him oh maher talking about islam and THIS was embarassing? Lmao. Fuck em both tbfh

    13. Maybe there were Canadians on the committee who didn’t like that he changed the story arc and largely left out Canada’s contribution to the events.

Argo was 90% crap which completely downplayed Canadian participation. Typical American bullshit. If you don’t believe me check it out yourselves.

Ben your film got Best Picture – the biggest prize of the show.

And it was like only the fifth or sixth best movie from the picks.

This man will complain about anything.

The host Seth McFarlane even apologized to Affleck mid opening ceremonies and said I quote „they know they messed up“

Was it really? I have no idea who was nominated and who the Oscar’s…. not just for the year of Argo but every single year. Most people pay very little attention to this. Even if they watch the Oscar’s , a week later, they pretty much forgot who won or who was nominated.

Argo still won best pic tho so I think he can get over it eventually

I saw that movie when it came out and I don’t remember a single scene

I mean, I don’t *hate* him as an actor, but his ego/self image is WAAAAYYY bigger than warranted.

Argo did not deserve best picture

the movie pacing was Point A, Point B, walk around, Point C movie ends

    22. Get out there and do it even better Ben , stop whining about a damn 15 year old movie

Greyhound bus-lines offered Canadians a month long bus pass for $99.00 as a thank you.
I got to go to Florida and meet my great uncle. We live in BC.

    24. „I had a small part in Argo. As well as the porn version, Our Goo.“ – Brandi Maxxx, Parks and Recreation.

      Now that’s good writing.

    25. “I was thinking, boy, he’s got so many better places to be,” Kimmel quipped about DiCaprio. “And the movie wins best picture. The director Paul Thomas Anderson wins best director, and then he doesn’t win. And I’m thinking he must be so pissed that [he had to leave] whatever he got airlifted from — a yacht somewhere — and couldn’t be there anymore. He came to lose.”

I don’t think Leo gives a shit after he finally won for The Revenant, even took a 4 year hiatus after the win… it’s just for love of the game at this point

    26. This and many other reasons why no one should ever take the awards seriously.

Also, The Wire never won an Emmy.

He solidified my respect for him as a director with The Town. Doesnt need to win an Oscar for directing, just keep directing quality.

Also, dude married J Lo *twice*. An Oscar snub is not the most embarrassing thing going on for this millionaire.

EDIT: I was mistaken about marrying twice.
