The US holds less than 5% of the world’s population but has nearly 25% of its prisoners.

Australia has the weird idea lately that we need to be tougher on crime, particularly regarding bail.
> The number of people in Australian prisons is at an all-time high and almost half of them have not been sentenced. Unsentenced prisoners, also known as people on remand, increased by 8 per cent (1,345 people) to 19,119 in the last quarter, accounting for 42 per cent of people in prison.

The war on drugs was/is a primary driver of incarceration rates in the US. Those rates have been coming down in recent years, but not fast enough.

We are just going to ignore the millions of people in concentration camps in China??
Or the fact that in Islamic countries they just execute you and your family instead of prison for virtually anything they don’t like?
This map is a joke

These numbers are pretty outdated, the US rate (while still very high) has gone down by 100, leaving it at #5, while El Salvador’s has gone up to ~1600, meaning that more than 1% of its population is currently in prison.

The US has high crime and a high ability to actually catch criminals.
Ideally you’d have a low amount of people in jail because of a low amount of crime, but high crime and no one in jail is just anarchy.
Or worse, atrocious behavior just ain’t illegal.

The real problem with incarceration rate statistics is that the less a country is ruled by law, the fewer people are going to be in prison anyway.
For example, I **know** that a country like South Africa has super high crime rates for just about every category. In a sane world, they’d have a sky-high incarceration rate. But they don’t. That tells me that policing isn’t effective, the judicial system doesn’t work and you can get away with a lot, apparently.
I’m not trying to say it’s a hell hole, I’m just saying that I absolutely won’t be visiting any time soon but I wouldn’t know any of this if I went by incarceration rate statistics.
