This is, by far, the dumbest move the Carney government will have made if they do this.

Edit – If you think Conservatives would’ve kept out foreign buyers you’re fooling yourself there too. Carney once again proves he’s a Conservative in Liberal coat.

This seems like a dreadful idea and a quick means of restarting the ever increasing pricing of housing. Pricing most of the local population out of ever owning a home is a dreadful idea.

    3. When people say the feds have no control or business on housing realize the feds have massive influence on demand.

The lack of popelation growth is having a big impact on housing and right now housing isnt seen as a good speculative investment

Its a good thing but I feel by 2027 the govt will boost immigration to boost housing and such.

Be honest the govt should get foriegn investment in business and infrastructure not housing

The mask is off. Carney hired a housing minister with over 10 million in personal real estate, Carney is heavily invested in Brookefield.

Does anyone really think these people want housing go lower in price?

    5. Paywalled.
Hasn’t foreign investment been a driver of house prices when they buy up all the properties to rent or sit on as an investment? How is this a solution to anything?

we noticed we havent got our usual 20% apr over the last couple years so we are gonna need to inflate the market again to not lose the super important growth canadians expect and deserve.

    7. Specific-Answer3590 on

This is so disgusting. It seems that all this housing minister is worried about (massive conflict of interest as well btw) is ensuring growth of housing prices. It befuddles me why Carney chose this moron over Nate Erskine-Smith. This is exactly why young ppl are sick of Liberals.

Boomers will love this from their guy. Now they can sell their $1.5 million shanty shack for $3 million because there’s a long line of foreign investors scratching at the opportunity.

    9. God the next election can’t come soon enough, I guess the fat cats in Ottawa have no idea what the people are living

So the party in the pocket of the chinese communist party, as lifting the band to allow a chinese investment, got it

I’m convinced that Liberal voters are all just homeowners who want their property values to just keep going up, and care about literally nothing else regarding Canada.

HARDCORE against this. Don’t let money pour into the country and have Toronto become Vancouver 2.0

    13. Wow Canada seriously hates its youth doesnt it? Don’t worry though one day your parents will die and you can hop on the train too!

I understand that a massive voting base is absolutely levered up on debt tied to the equity in their home. There has to be a better solution than constantly sweeping this issue under the rug however.

    14. HotelDisastrous288 on

What better way to lower housing prices than to let people that will not live in houses but them.

This fucks home buyers but protects real estate investors.

      Wish I was shocked.

    15. Long_Doughnut798 on

Oh that would really be a big mistake. Have we not learned anything from the past 10 years.

    16. early_morning_guy on

Look at how the housing market fared under Gregor Roberson in Vancouver. We know whose interests these creeps represent.

    17. toilet_for_shrek on

Housing prices decline slightly for one year, and our landlord-politician class is already looking to pump the numbers back up. The homeowner boomers would love this though, which is who the LPC seems to be catering to these days anyway.

Greedy people will never learn. They are too psychopathic to learn. It’s seems they cannot grasp the concept of „future“. They will suck every nickel out of an industry and completely destroy it. When it comes time to sell the business (or property) and retire in wealth and luxury, the million they thought they would get might be 350 thousand. They are so „drugged out“ on their money, they can’t grasp the concept of future.

Terrible move and it will be wildly unpopular for carney, so hopefully it won’t go ahead. I could live with foreign investment in affordable new builds.

    20. Felon_musk1939 on

I went looking at houses to rent in the summer of 2023 and it was a nightmare. One reason was the number of houses owned by people who weren’t in the country. I found it infuriating that some houses had fallen into disrepair and the rents were ridiculously unreasonable considering the condition they were in.
Bad idea Carney Government. More ideas like this and I’ll vote conservative just to spite you.

    21. Logical-Let-2386 on

A lot of MPs must be having trouble selling their 4th house for obscene profit.

    22. TheTesticler on

      Don’t you fucking do it.

This time around the only thing that will be different is that there will be more rich Americans coming.

    23. I guarantee to be downvoted into oblivion for this…BUT! The reality is that foreign investment actually makes up a small percentage of ownership in Canada. The affordability of homes are impacted by this very little, same with the “supply” issue that our politicians keep parroting as well. Canadian markets have the most supply that we’ve seen (almost in history). Most of the slumlords are Canadians, I hate to break it to you. Builders aren’t building anymore either. Unfortunately this is a dog whistle issue that Canadians have a skewed reality of because of politicians constantly use it as a talking point. This wouldn’t impact prices much at all…

    24. Remote-Ebb5567 on

Things exactly what liberal voters wanted. Soon we’ll see people called racist if they aren’t on board with this

    25. Sadly voters have no say in government direction, it’s always the big money lobby groups who control every action done. Until we the people demand that big money is kept out of politics this will always be against us.

    26. Falconflyer75 on

Carney does know his win was basically the biggest political miracle in modern history right?

I hope he knows what he’s doing but he’s playing with fucking magma here

    27. fighting_fit_dream on

Does someone have a non-paywalled version of this article?

It’s the second time I’m seeing this story but both times it’s been paywalled. I wanna get the details of this story before I start any letter writing campaigns

If the government is entertaining this, they should get inundated with letters and complaints from Canadians. It’s need to be made clear this is moving in the WRONG direction

    28. It won’t happen – it would be political suicide.

The LPC is well aware of how people are struggling under today’s high housing prices – the very last thing they’ll do is anything that would increase housing prices even more than they are today.

    29. kredditwheredue on

Hate this.  Does anyone have a „Why This is Good, for Dummies“ primer?

    30. McMillennial on

I keep voting liberal for lower house prices and better jobs. It’s definitely gonna happen right?

    31. LloydBraun75 on

The Canadian housing market CANNOT be used as a Casino for foreign investors ever again!

    32. slumlordscanstarve on

This government is so fucking out of touch with reality that it’s laughable except the joke has gone too long.
